Confirmed Wisconsin swine flu cases now at 298
May 9, 2009 12:19 AM

UNDATED (WREX) - Wisconsin health officials are now reporting 298 confirmed cases of the swine flu virus, and 36 probable cases.
Of the confirmed cases, 5 are in Rock County and 1 is in Green County.
Wisconsin's numbers jumped significantly from Wednesday to Thursday as test results started coming back from the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene.
Illinois' cases took a similiar jump earlier in the week when its state lab tests came back.
Most of Wisconsin's confirmed cases and all the probable cases are in the Milwaukee area.
Officials continue recommending anyone with flu-like symptoms stay home from work or school to slow the spread of disease.

Most of Wisconsin?s probable flu cases have now been confirmed. State health officials reported 233 confirmed incidents Thursday of the Influenza A virus.

Tests are now being analyzed at state labs, instead of being shipped to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and that?s bringing faster results.<SCRIPT type=text/javascript>function photoFull (URL) {day = new Date();id = day.getTime();eval("page" + id + " = window.open(URL, '" + id + "', 'toolbar=0,scrollbars=0,location=0,statusbar=0,menubar=0,resizable=0,width=510,height=510,left = 137,top = 84');");}</SCRIPT>

H1N1 confirmed at St.Norbert College

With just days left in the school year, students at St. Norbert College received an 11th hour surprise on Friday night. An email notified them that the swine flu, or H1N1, had found its way onto campus.

"it's more nerve racking that I expected. I knew it was in Wisconsin, but it sort of came up quickly on us," sophomore Ben Cahall said.

Three students have the virus. School officials said those infected left campus earlier in the week to get tested and have not returned since.

"We took it one step farther and encouraged them to go home so they could be with their families and not be inside the residence halls," Bridget O'Connor, the Vice President of Enrollment at St. Norbert, said.

Students on campus said two of those infected are freshman girls who live in the Sensenbrenner dorm. Although it's still unknown how they got the virus.

"I'm pretty scared because we were sick earlier and now we're just freaking out wondering if we have it," freshman Cathy Arcaro said.

At the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control, St. Norbert College will remain open. But extra staff were brought in for the weekend to disinfect areas used by the students in question.

O'Connor said the college is taking all necessary precautions but students will only be on campus for a few more days. Classes have already ended for the semester and finals wrap up next week.

"It is good timing that we're nearing the end of the school year," O'Connor said.

Some students said they are taking extra precautions, despite not believing the virus is all that it's cracked up to be.

"I'm taking it seriously. I'm just trying to stay healthy but it's basically, from what I heard about it, is just like any other flu virus, just a different strain," freshman Isabella Benassi said.

In addition to staying healthy, one RA (resident advisor) said some students were more concerned about finishing out the semester. But, even with confirmed cases of the swine flu, it's business as usual at the college.

"Students still need to show up and take their exams and complete their academic responsibilities for the semester," O'Connor said.
