H5 and N1 were detected, but from additional testing "No virus isolated". Small, but perhaps important distinction.

Yes, these repeated failures to isolate are not a good sign. These samples pass through many hands, and isolating H5N1, especially Qinghai H5N1, from live (or hunter killed) birds is difficult. The vast majority of such isolations have been in Russia. Most H5N1 isolates in Europe have been from dead birds.

Thus, if the USDA has trouble isolating LPAI H5N1, they probably don't have much chance of isolating HPAI H5N1. There are many technical issues in play, and the failure to isolate indicates false negatives may be the rule, and not the exception.

I'll update this thread further tomorrow, but I just noticed that the Washington and New Jersey samples are not listed on the LPAI table.

It could be a clerical error or my cynical side is showing here, maybe they are included on another table that we don't have access to, perhaps one that starts with HP. :eek:

Also the USDA is way behind in posting results, we have samples as far back as October 19 with no results posted.

According to my contact at our local paper, The News Journal, "I'm working on it and will get back to you." This reporter interviewed me last year regarding BF and I have been in contact with him off and on ever since. Why the testing is taking so long remains a mystery. :( I'll post any updates when I receive them.
