Re: Confirmed/Suspected Cases in New York State outside NYC

Oh joy! The NYS Department of Health is doing my job for me now. They've printed up a very handy map outlining # of confirmed cases throughout the state.

http://www.health.state.ny.us/diseases/communicable/influenza/h1n1/docs/state_h1n1_cases_by_county.pdf

Confirmed cases as of May 14, 2009:

Chautauqua - 1
Cortland - 1
Erie - 1
Lewis - 1
Monroe - 1
Nassau - 18
Onondaga - 5
Orange - 3
Saratoga - 1
Suffolk - 17
Washington - 1
Westchester - 13

and NYC is at 167 confirmed cases.

Re: Confirmed/Suspected Cases in New York State outside NYC

:tiphat: Happy to help! To be honest I only started this thread because I wanted to know what was happening in my state, and no one else on Flutrackers was posting about it. So I started doing my own research and putting it up for others to read. Feel free to add additional info anytime.

I've been sticking to posting DOH numbers recently but they are dismally inaccurate, basically a joke. Comprehensive testing has all but stopped in NY, which makes it impossible to know what's really happening. And combing through the "spin" coverage of H1N1 offered by local newspapers and tv stations was making me so mad I had to stop that for a while. Now that people are dying I guess the MSM might start treating this seriously again.

No news articles about the newest Clinton County case that I could find. The local paper in Plattsburgh, the Press Republican, has nothing to say about it. And the Clinton County Department of Health website has not been updated since their first case was identified on 5/15/09.

Also could find no news articles about the newest Suffolk county cases. But Newsday.com (covering Long Island) had plenty of articles with today's date about NYC schools reopening. The Suffolk County Department of Health H1N1 webpage has not been updated since 5/8/09.

http://wnyt.com/article/stories/S950257.shtml?cat=300

Reported by Newsday.com covering Long Island and NYC:

New swine flu cases and large numbers of students with flu-like illness closing more schools in NYC and Long Island. Henry Viscardi School in Albertson, a school for disabled children, was the latest to close due to high absentee rate and flu symptoms in both students and staff. 13 more schools close in NYC, with another planned closing in Manhattan. Health officials are suggesting prophylactic anti-viral treatment for all students at Henry Viscardi. The school shares a campus with a disabled work-program for adults, which has not experienced high absentee rates and will not be closed.

Quote from the article:
Dr. Scott Harper, a city Health Department epidemiologist, said scientists are currently focusing on how many people are becoming ill and the severity of their symptoms.

"The big picture is not the number of deaths in any given city," Harper said. "The big picture is how many cases are occurring."

No data exists that shows swine flu spreading more in densely populated cities like New York than in rural or suburban areas, Harper said.

Reported by The Buffalo News in Buffalo, NY:

Re: Confirmed/Suspected Cases in New York State outside NYC

News updates for 5/29/09:

Reported by WXXI in Rochester, NY:

A Fairbanks Road Elementary student, in the Churchville-Chili School District, identified as the third confirmed case in Monroe County. Diagnosis took 7 days to confirm, after the student had all ready recovered and returned to class. Monroe County Health Director Andrew Doniger says the child was probably infected by out-of-town visitors who had flu symptoms when they arrived, although he says it's very likely that H1N1 is passing from person to person in the Rochester area. Monroe County Health Department is now focusing on spread of the virus, rather than identifying individual cases. Fairbanks School is remaining open. (other statistics given in this article are out of date)

Re: Confirmed/Suspected Cases in New York State outside NYC

News updates for 6/1/09:

Reported 5/30/09 by The Journal News in White Plains, NY:

Widespread flu-like illness reported in the Edgemont and Hastings-on-Hudson school districts in Westchester County. Officials say there is no indication that this is related to swine flu, but the article does not specify that any of the students have been tested for H1N1. According to school superintendent Nancy Taddiken, 20% of the students and 10 teachers at the Edgemont Junior-Senior High School reported flu-like symptoms last week. "It is extremely out of the ordinary. We typically have (a student) absentee rate of maybe 3 to 4 percent," Taddiken said. The Hastings School district reports 15% of the enrollment is experiencing flu-like symptoms. Health officials at this point consider the swine flu to be of relatively minimal public-health significance. Both schools plan to remain open and all activities will continue as scheduled. To date there are 23 confirmed cases of swine flu in Westchester County.

Reported by the Albany Times Union in Albany, NY:

Columbia County confirms first case of swine flu. No information available on age or location, but the person has a mild case and is expected to make a full recovery.

Reported by the Lower Hudson Journal News in White Plains, NY:

A West Haverstraw Elementary student is the sixth confirmed H1N1 case in Rockland County. There are no plans to close the school because the period in which the student would have been contagious, May 13 to May 20, has now passed. Previous cases in the county were 2 adults, 2 pre-school aged children, and one student at Eldorado Elementary School in Chestnut Ridge. None were hospitalized.

http://lohud.com/article/20090602/NEWS03/906020359/-1/SPORTS

Reported by the Post Standard in Syracuse, NY:
**this is repeated info from a different source, check out the quote from the Onondaga Health Commissioner

Onondaga County reports 9 new cases of swine flu, bringing the county total to 29. 8 of the new cases are children, some are students of Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School and Dr. Martin Luther King School in Syracuse. One is an adult who was hospitalized and released.

Quoted from the article:
There likely are more, said Dr. Cynthia Morrow, Onondaga County's health commissioner. "We're only testing a few children from each school, so clearly from every confirmed case there are going to be multiple children who have H1N1 who do not ever get tested," Morrow said. The Health Department no longer will report the number of children at schools where cases of swine flu have been confirmed, Morrow said. It will only report on new school involvement.

Morrow is reporting "widespread H1N1 activity" in Onondaga County.

So far, there are 11 schools in the county with confirmed cases: Jamesville-DeWitt Middle School in the Jamesville-DeWitt school district and Dr. Martin Luther King School in Syracuse, Fabius-Pompey Elementary in the Fabius-Pompey school district; Eagle Hill Middle School, Mott Road Elementary and Wellwood Middle School in the Fayetteville-Manlius school district; and Bellevue, Ed Smith, LeMoyne, Percy Hughes and Roberts elementary schools in the Syracuse City school district.
