Larimer County health officials say a 39-year-old woman in LaPorte is the second Coloradan with a confirmed case of West Nile virus this year.

The woman, whose name wasn?t released, is the first Larimer County resident diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease this year. The Larimer County Department of Health and Environment said Saturday that the woman became ill in early June. She wasn?t hospitalized and is recovering at home.

West Nile virus can cause paralysis, encephalitis and meningitis.

Last year Colorado had 103 human cases of West Nile, including three deaths.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Larimer County health officials say they have confirmed the first cases of West Nile-infected mosquitoes in the county this season.

?It?s already been a week since many of those mosquitoes were trapped, so it?s likely that the number of infected mosquitoes has risen since then,? Dr. Adrienne LeBailly, director of the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment said in a news release.

Health officials said six humans are known to have contracted West Nile this year. One of those cases was confirmed in Larimer County.

DELTA ��? A confirmed human case of West Nile virus ��? and a positive sample from a designated mosquito trap site ��? has led Delta County to step up mosquito-control efforts.

Delta?s victim reported a feverish illness, and though he didn?t have to be hospitalized, lab results confirmed he had West Nile virus, county Health Officer Bonnie Horn Koehler said Friday.

Officials determined that he contracted the mosquito-borne illness while working out of state.

First 2 cases of West Nile reported

The Mesa County Health Department on Thursday confirmed the first two human cases of West Nile virus this year.

Health Department spokeswoman Tamara Capp said two men in their late 30s were diagnosed with West Nile fever. They were not hospitalized.

Four Additional Human Cases of West Nile Virus Confirmed
West Nile activity is increasing as Labor Day weekend approaches
Over the last several weeks, West Nile virus activity has increased throughout Mesa County. The total number of human cases has increased to six. Following is information related to these cases: Age range: 20-51 years One female and five males One case of meningitis and five cases of West Nile virus fever Three cases reside in the Fruita area and three in the Grand Junction area
In addition to the increase in human cases, mosquitoes trapped in the Grand Junction area have tested positive for West Nile virus.
Prevention
Dr. Aduddell, Medical Officer at Mesa County Health Department, continues to stress the importance of personal protective measures to prevent West Nile virus infection. Protection is prudent with the associated increase in outdoor activity over the holiday weekend.
Avoid spending time outside when mosquitoes are most active, especially at dawn and the first two hours after sunset When outdoors, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Apply insect repellent containing DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or Picaridin, according to label instructions. Make sure that doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property that can support mosquito breeding.
Signs and Symptoms
Symptoms include fever, headache, tiredness, and body aches, occasionally with a skin rash (on the trunk of the body) and swollen lymph glands. While the illness can be as short as a few days, even healthy people have reported being sick for several weeks or longer.
It is estimated that approximately 1 in 150 persons infected with the West Nile virus will develop a more severe form of disease such as encephalitis and meningitis. Symptoms may include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, and paralysis. Serious illness can occur in people of any age, however people over age 50 and some immunocompromised persons are at the highest risk for getting severely ill when infected with WNV.

Since July 1, a total of eight cases of West Nile virus infection have been confirmed in Larimer County. Out of those eight, six had West Nile fever, and one was discovered to have West Nile infection when being screened to donate blood. The eighth person was hospitalized with West Nile encephalitis, but is now recovering at home.

First West Nile death reported in county

Mesa County health officials reported the county?s first West Nile death Wednesday.

Neil Milton Springer, 82, died of the virus Monday. It was the first death reported in the county from the virus this year and the third statewide.
