Posted 1:01 pm, September 5, 2014, by Will C. Holden

DENVER ? A potentially severe virus that has plagued hundred of children across a 900-mile stretch in the Midwest in recent weeks has made its way to Colorado.

The severe respiratory illness, which in some cases, is believed to have been brought on by human enterovirus-68, an uncommon respiratory viral pathogen, is impacting mostly children, including several in Colorado.

Angie Anania, a spokesperson for Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children in Denver, said five different children have been checked into their hospital because of this virus this week alone.

One 13-year-old was discovered unconscious and barely breathing on Wednesday. He was placed on a ventilator and has slowly improved, Anania said, but he was still in the hospital?s intensive care unit as of Friday.

In addition to the five severe cases, Anania said the hospital has seen a large number of less severe, but related cases in their inpatient unit...

Officials at Children's Hospital of Colorado said they have seen an estimated 250 children a day since Wednesday with severe respiratory symptoms.

"We've been seeing a very high volume in our ER, ICU and among hospitalized patients. The hospital is very, very full," said Dr. Christine Nyquist, a pediatric infectious disease physician. "Kids are getting (the virus) and having asthma complications."

The suspected virus is human enterovirus 68, a rare virus associated with respiratory illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control...

An illness that has afflicted more than a dozen children with some paralysis is subsiding in Colorado, doctors say. The illness, called Acute Flaccid Myelitis, is an infection that can cause children to have weakness in limbs or facial muscles.

Since Aug. 1, doctors identified 14 children infected in Colorado. But they haven?t seen any new cases in the last two weeks...
