McKee Medical Center to offer free H1N1 vaccinations

McKee Medical Center Community Wellness will offer a number of H1N1 vaccinations at no charge during a Monday, Jan. 25 community clinic.

The first 100 vaccinations will be offered at no charge. The remaining vaccinations will have a $10 administration fee.

Other vaccines will be offered for a fee at these clinics: a limited supply of seasonal flu vaccine for $25, tetanus, $40, TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), $65, and pneumonia, $50. Cash, credit card and checks are accepted for these vaccines. Medicare Part B is accepted for seasonal flu, pneumonia and H1N1 vaccine.

The clinic will be from 3 to 5 p.m. in the McKee Conference and Wellness Center, 2000 Boise Ave.

H1N1 Vaccine Available in Fruita, Seasonal Flu Nasal Spray Available at Health Department

County health officals want to remind residents that it's not too late to get their H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines.

MESA COUNTY, Colo (KKCO) -- County health officals want to remind residents that it's not too late to get their H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines.

The Mesa County Health Department continues to offer H1N1 vaccines to anyone older than 6 months.

This week, it will begin offering the H1N1 vaccine by appointment at the new Community Services West building in Fruita. Appointments are available for Wednesday, January 27 from 12:00pm - 5:00pm. Residents can call (970) 248-6900 to schedule an appointment.

H1N1 vaccines are also available on a walk-in basis at the Mesa County Health Department from 8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Both the nasal and injectable versions of the vaccine are available at no charge to the public.

"Although H1N1 activity has peaked in Mesa County, there is concern that an additional wave of activity may occur," said Dr. Michael Aduddell, Director of the Mesa County Health Department. "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend that individuals be vaccinated against H1N1."

The Health Department also has limited doses of seasonal nasal vaccine available for $30 per dose.

The El Paso County Health Department will sponsor a free H1N1 flu vaccine clinic next month specifically for senior citizens, though anyone older than six months can get the vaccine.

"It's important for seniors and for all members of our community to remember that H1N1 flu still is circulating and can be a serious disease," said Kandi Buckland, executive director of the Health Department.
Cases of H1N1 flu are on the decline right now but could increase any time, Buckland said. "Now is not a time to let down your guard," she added. "Many people still are susceptible because they haven't been vaccinated. Now is the window of opportunity so we can try to prevent a third wave of the H1N1 flu pandemic."


These clinics in March are planned at community centers serving significant senior citizen populations, but anyone older than 6 months of age is eligible to be vaccinated at these clinics, sponsored by the Health Department in partnership with the Visiting Nurse Association.

  • March 18, 1 to 4 p.m., Meadows Park Community Center, 1943 S. El Paso Ave., Colorado Springs

CU-Boulder to students: Get H1N1 shots before spring break​

With the University of Colorado's spring break less than a month away, campus health officials are hoping students who travel overseas don't bring a certain something back with them: the H1N1 flu virus. ​

And to sweeten the deal, they're giving away a pair of iPod nanos to help convince needle-shy students to get their free shots. ​

"Even though incidence of H1N1 in higher education is fairly low right now according to the American College Association, there's always a chance of another outbreak," Allissa Baumbach, assistant to the director of CU's Wardenburg Health Center, said Wednesday. "The iPod giveaway is to encourage students to get vaccinated." ​

The university, in conjunction with Boulder County Public Health, is offering a series of free H1N1 flu vaccine clinics over the next week for students, faculty and staff. The first one is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ​

Thursday in the Wolf Law Building, Room 202. All students who get vaccinated are entered to win one of two iPods.
CU senior Kellis Johnson said Wednesday she will vaccinated before her spring break trip to Mexico. ​

"I hadn't really thought about it, but I'll probably go get (a shot) because I know swine flu started somewhere outside the U.S., and I'm also going out of the country to multiple places this summer," Johnson said. ​

Organizers said the focus of the CU clinics is to ensure that students traveling over spring break are properly protected from the virus, which spread to pandemic proportions last year, and resulted in outbreaks on campus during the end of the spring semester and the beginning of the fall semester last year. ​

"The very nature of a pandemic is that it is global, so any travel does carry some risk of exposure of any illness, including H1N1," Murielle Romine, Boulder County Public Health's disease control and emergency preparedness coordinator. ​

According to a Feb. 5 update from the World Health Organization, "Pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009 virus continues to be the predominant influenza virus circulating worldwide." ​

There were 10 confirmed cases of H1N1 diagnosed at Wardenburg last semester. There were many more potential cases that were not tested for identification or diagnosed at different medical facilities. ​

"When you look at the vast majority of flu type A cases around the country, most were H1N1," said Sandra Sonoda, of Wardenburg's infection control department. "We only tested the tip of the iceberg." ​

Citing a 14.8 percent vaccination rate, Ned Calogne, Colorado's chief medical officer, has stated that a vast majority of the Colorado population is vulnerable to the illness. In a press release Wednesday, he encouraged people to take advantage of the state's ample supply of the vaccine. ​
