Colombia: 8 thousand evacuees due to the eruption of ‘Galeras’ volcano

In southern Colombia, near the border with Ecuador, the Galeras volcano erupted, causing this Saturday an evacuation of about 8 thousand people helped by different emergency services. The Colombian Institute of Geology and Mining (Ingeominas) raised to red alert the warning in the region.
Official sources stated that “There is no evidence until now of personal damages which may be caused by the eruption of the volcano.”
The eruption began on Saturday at 7:41 pm and were affected the municipalities of Nariño, La Florida and the villages of Genoy and Mapachico near San Juan de Pasto. The emergency services enabled shelters for evacuees.
Carlos Ivan Marquez, director of ‘Socorro Nacional de la Cruz Roja’, told to ‘Radio Caracol’ that “There was a high ammount of ash above the volcano and that´s why it was requested the evacuation of 2 thousand families who live near that area, which may be affected.”
The director added that “At this moment there is no record of injuries, and so far there is only information about fires in forests due to incandescent material.”
Spokesman reported that there won´t be canceled the traditional Carnival of ‘Blancos y Negros’ in San Juan de Pasto, capital of Nariño.
