The Colombian authorities warned about the increase in dengue in the country, since they have registered almost 12,000 cases so far this year, of which 162 have been serious, it was reported on Wednesday (03.01.2023).

The National Institute of Health (INS) pointed out that "the disease has been increasing since the end of 2022 and outbreaks have occurred in 103 of the 824 municipalities with populations at risk from dengue."

According to the Institute, 11,760 cases of dengue were registered between January 1 and February 11, of which 6,045 had no warning signs, 5,553 did, and 162 were serious.

The departments of Sucre, Meta, La Guajira, Bolívar, Cundinamarca, Norte de Santander, Atlántico, Guaviare, Nariño, Arauca, Huila, Cauca, Amazonas, Magdalena, Putumayo, Caquetá and Chocó are the most affected because they are above the number expected of cases.

"Colombia has the goal of reducing dengue mortality to less than 2 percent in the coming years," the INS said in the statement, in which it highlighted the importance of taking "prevention actions and timely care" in the municipalities to "reduce the presence of the mosquito that transmits the disease and ensure that citizens with symptoms go to the doctor on time."

Dengue, which is endemic in most of Colombia and is transmitted by the female Aedes Aegypti mosquito, can evolve into a potentially fatal condition called severe dengue or dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Colombia reports almost 40 thousand cases of dengue this year: there is an upward trend in 23 departments
The viral disease has several municipalities on alert.
5/29/2023

Dengue is one of the viral diseases that is circulating with more force in Colombia. At least that is what the most recent figures shared by the National Institute of Health (INS) show, which in its most recent weekly epidemiological bulletin documented that 39,803 cases of dengue have been detected in the country in 2023.

"In epidemiological week 20 of 2023, 2,988 probable cases of dengue were reported: 1,820 cases this week and 1,168 cases from previous weeks," the INS detailed. "According to the accumulated, 39,803 cases are registered, 22,359 (56.2%) without alarm signs, 16,923 (42.5%) with alarm signs and 521 (1.3%) of severe dengue," added the INS.

In turn, it found that seven out of 10 cases of dengue that are registered in national territory occurred in the territorial entities of Meta, Tolima, Cundinamarca, Santander, Barranquilla, Sucre, Cali, Cartagena, Cesar, Norte de Santander, Atlántico, Cordoba and Huila.

It was also known that there is an upward trend in infections in 23 of the 32 departments of the country. In these territorial entities, the INS pointed out, a growth in dengue cases has been reported during the last three weeks compared to the same previous period.

“At epidemiological week 20 of 2023, the national incidence of dengue is 112.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants at risk; for the same period of 2022, the incidence was 60.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants,” added the INS.

And he recalled that Bogotá is the only territorial entity in the country in which there is no population that is at risk of contagion by dengue for the consideration of the health authorities. This is because this viral disease is mainly transmitted in areas that are less than 2,200 meters above sea level.

To this extent, the departments in which proportionally more cases have been registered were also known. "The territorial entities of Amazonas, Vaupés, Meta, Guaviare, Putumayo, Tolima, Caquetá and Cundinamarca persist with the highest incidences, registering rates of more than 230 cases per 100,000 inhabitants," indicated the INS.

At the national level, the number of cases that the country is reporting is "above expectations." In other words, the number of sick people has exceeded the projections that the INS had for this same time of year and that were drawn from the historical records of dengue.

According to INS calculations, at the national level there are about 825 municipalities that are at risk of dengue outbreaks. Taking this into account, they pointed out that one in four vulnerable municipalities (25.7%) were reporting numbers of people sick with dengue above what was expected.

In the larger municipalities the figures show a relatively different picture. To this extent, they pointed out that of those municipal entities where there are more than 100,000 inhabitants at risk of developing dengue, 57.9% reported cases above what was expected (compared to the cases that they had been registering historically.
There are already 134 suspicious deaths from dengue this year

In 2023, the Colombian health system has identified about 134 suspected deaths from dengue. Of them, it has confirmed 25 cases.

"57 cases were ruled out and 52 probable deaths are under study," warned the INS and maintained that there is a slight increase compared to last year. For the same period in 2022, the country had registered 24 confirmed deaths from dengue.
Mosquitoes are the main transmitters of dengue.

Finally, the INS has emphasized that its data is preliminary and, in the case of the most recent bulletin, warned that there is a "lag" in the figures, for which "adjustment processes" are being carried out.

HEALTH CONSULTANTS SAS
August 30, 2023 - 11:05 am

In Colombia, 44 people have died from dengue, which has once again turned on the alerts for the epidemic outbreak that has been occurring in the country, this after knowing the bulletin of the epidemiological week, from August 13 to 19, 2023, from the Institute National Health (INS) in which the latest data on the situation and the limited management of the country's health authorities were known.

The Ministry of Health issued a statement alerting the community to reinforce preventive and control actions in the face of the dengue outbreak. "It is essential that both EPS and IPS guarantee the comprehensive clinical management of cases in accordance with national guidelines, relying on the strengthening of institutional capacities through the realization and certification in the course: "Diagnosis and clinical management of dengue" of the PAHO available on the virtual campus" mentions the statement...

...According to the epidemiological report 33 of the National Institute of Health, in Colombia during 2023, cut to epidemiological week 32, 67,944 cases of dengue have been reported. Of these, 37,358 (55.0%) without warning signs; 29,597 (43.6%) with warning signs and 989 (1.5%) were cases of severe dengue.

62.8% (42,636) of the cases reported in the country come from Meta, Tolima, Santander, Cali, Cesar, Bolívar, Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Sucre and Córdoba.
This year, the event at the national level has remained above expectations, compared to its historical behavior. Between July and August, there is an upward trend of 12.7%, compared to the two previous months. Behavior given mainly by the report of cases in Cali, Santander, Meta, Tolima, Bolívar, Antioquia and Cesar, which concentrate 54.6% in recent weeks.

Likewise, 32 territorial entities are also above expectations, with an upward trend of more than 30.0% in the last period analyzed (epidemiological weeks 28 to 31) compared to the previous period (epidemiological weeks 24 to 27). in Antioquia, Atlántico, Barranquilla, Bolívar, Cali, Cartagena, Córdoba, Cundinamarca, Guainía, Huila, Magdalena, Norte de Santander, Santa Marta, Santander and Sucre.

As of August 12, 2023, 44 dengue deaths were confirmed nationwide for a mortality rate of 0.12 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and a lethality of 0.06%. Despite the fact that this last indicator is lower than the goal established at the national level (0.10%), the territorial entities of Amazonas, Norte de Santander, La Guajira, Magdalena, Sucre, Arauca, Chocó, Nariño exceed that goal with fatalities higher for dengue.

A geographical analysis shows that the Andean and Caribbean region concentrate 60.5% (41,103) of the country's cases and 65.9% (29) of the confirmed deaths; while the highest dengue incidence and mortality rates are observed in the Amazon and Orinoquía region. The circulation of the four serotypes has been identified in the different regions...
