sticky, please
that's the interesting and important question now, whether HKflu(1968,H3N2) and
Anshanflu(1977,H1N1) will survive
flu-B will probably survive, it survived all past pandemics

Re: Cocirculation of Influenza Viruses

that map is not up to date

I assume they get their data from flunet
autologin: http://apps.who.int/globalatlas/autologin/flunet_login.asp
then
click : "DATA QUERY" on the top left
choose : "Select/Deselect All"
click : "Add to Selected Indicators"
click : "Go" in the top of the mid field (not the one in the right field)
scroll down in the middle box and highlite "China"
click : ">>"
select a time period on the bottom left (default is all weeks so far in 2010)
click "View Data" on the bottom right

{ flunet: http://gamapserver.who.int/GlobalAtlas/home.asp }
{ help: http://gamapserver.who.int/GlobalAtlas/DataQuery/help.asp }
{ direct link should be: http://gamapserver.who.int/GlobalAtlas/DataQuery/browse.asp?catID=120000000000&lev=2 }

Re: Cocirculation of Influenza Viruses

Centers for Disease Control, R.O.C.(Taiwan) reports for week 3:

"During week 1?3, all (95% confidence interval 91%?100%) subtyped influenza A viruses being reported to Taiwan CDC through contracted laboratories during this period were pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses. (No Influenza B weeks 1-3 detected)

Taiwan CDC has antigenically characterized 134 human influenza viruses [1 influenza A (H1), 23 influenza A (H3), 7 influenza B, 103 pandemic (H1N1) 2009] since June 1, 2009.

None of the influenza seasonal A (H1) viruses tested was related to the influenza A (H1N1) component of the 2009?10 influenza vaccine (A/Brisbane/59/2007). Three (13%) of the influenza A (H3N2)viruses tested were related to the A (H3N2) vaccine component (A/Brisbane/10/2007). Four (57%) of the influenza B viruses tested belonged to the B/Victoria lineage and were related to the B component of the 2009?10 influenza vaccine(B/Brisbane/60/2008). All(100%)of the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 viruses tested were related to the A/California/07/2009 vaccine component."

was just upated.
China's flu-A is almost back to normal, they get a flu-B wave now.
~5% H3N2, ~1% H1N1
You can see how flu-A waves provide shortterm (some months) immunity
against other flu-A but not flu-B

Taiwan has lots of H3N2, 18% (183 promille) of all subtyped flu-A !

I will keep editing the first post in this thread, it's also sticky now.

Re: Cocirculation of Influenza Viruses

vaccination apparantly doesn't provide this kind of shortterm immunity
against all flu-A, which lets waves end and even suppresses
other flu-A (but not flu-B) towards the end of the wave.

Is this why the flu-vax works so good in theory but bad in practice ?
It prevents people from acquiring this (stronger) shortterm immunity in a wave,
a good proportion of which happens asymptomatically

Is it just T-cell immunity ? which -as I understand-
-other than the vax- mainly (only?)
works locally, in the affected cells

so, one strategy against a virulent H5-pandemic could be to start
a mild counter-pandemic with a designed virus.
For that we need to create good pandemic flu-viruses (like ******)
which likely will be able to outcrowd a H5N1 pandemic virus
or a new H9N2 pandemic virus or such with 1918-like virulence.
Will we faster create mild pandemic viruses in the lab (and keep
it safe ) than nature can create virulent pandemic viruses ?

strong decline of H3-isolates in China in week 4 !
see updated post #1

H3N2 seems to die

the next vaccine will presumably be bivalent Mx(Cancun),B(Victoria)

H3N2 may survive in swine and then jump to humans again in some years
one more reasons to increase swine surveillance

Re: Cocirculation of Influenza Viruses

33 old H1N1s and 15 H3N2s coming in from Russia !

Re: Cocirculation of Influenza Viruses

bump

see update above

****** as percent of all flu-A is up again to 96% in week 10 !
but no Russian update for week 10 nyet

China:
(H1):10,9,9,10,6,6,3,4,2,0
(H3):62,47,53,24,32,18,12,23,14,3
(Mx):1218,927,638,459,299,180,71,97,158,131
Russia:
(H1):7,21,26,14,12,33,55,16,10,0
(H3):3,6,10,9,4,15,5,11,9,0
(Mx):151,207,185,94,101,81,49,41,18,0

however, flu-wave usually start in China, SE-Asia usually "decides" what
strains are dominant the next season.
And China has 97.7% ****** in week 10 ! (besides flu-B)

-------------edit---------
Australia: H1: 0,0,0 H3:1,2,1 Mx:2,1,0

hmm, will they get H3N2 this coming season ?

Australia reports some H3, almost as much as Mx, but levels are still low
I read about ~140 tested flu-A in Australia, ~40 Mx
but only ~2 in average reported per week by flunet

Re: Cocirculation of Influenza Viruses

apparantly WHO claims for copyright on flunet-data,
counts of tested isolates submitted by the countries.

> ? World Health Organization - FluNet, 2009. All rights reserved.

so, am I allowed to post these tables and graphs ?
Can I download all the flunet-data and convert them to
computer-readable format and upload it, so anyone
can easily make statistics and graphs based on them
or would WHO like to prevent that (why ?)

I'll ask them

Re: Cocirculation of Influenza Viruses

I made a picture about H1,H3 cocirculation in China since 1997,
but wait for the WHO-copyright response before I post it.

The current situation looks similar to 1995/6 , when H1 also
suddenly outcrowded H3 in China but then H3 returned
nevertheless in 1996/7

H3 was clearly dominant in China from 2002 until the summer-wave in 2005
In 2003,2004 there was very little H1, even less than now.

But it survived (where ?) and even became dominant in 2005/6.
Is it because people became immune to H3 after the severe summer wave in 2005 ?

Remember, Southern China (Hong Kong) usually has 2 waves per year,
however the timings are not so clear as in USA,Europe.
Remember also, that flu-waves are believed to usually start/emerge in SE-Asia.
Flu usually doesn't survive summer in USA but rather is newly introduced the next season
from Asia with the then dominating strains from there.

** is different(so far), of course.

Re: Cocirculation of Influenza Viruses

From: Pandemic Influenza (H1N1) 2009 Is Associated with Severe Disease in India http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0010540

Confirmed cases
Since the beginning of this pandemic, 11 May to 31 October 2009, a total of 607,117 persons presented themselves for screening to various health centers in Pune. Of these 34,917 persons were determined as suspected cases of ILI. From 1 August to 31 October, a total of 7,866 suspected cases were sampled for diagnosis of influenza etiology. Frequencies of pandemic H1N1 and seasonal-A cases were 17.8% and 16.3% respectively (Table 1). Due to heavy work load and priority for identification of pandemic H1N1, all the influenza-A positive cases were not sub-typed. A sub-set of 374 seasonal-A positive samples, selected randomly for testing, yielded 86 (23%) seasonal H1N1, and 288 (77%) H3N2 virus. In a subset of 399 cases, selected randomly, only 6 were positive for influenza-B virus.
