Coast Guard reporting rig incident south of Vermilion Bay

An explosion on an oil rig south of Vermilion Bay sent the 13 people on board into the water Thursday morning around 9:30 a.m.

The incident happened 90 miles south of Vermillion Bay. (See map)

Coast Guard spokesman Bill Colclough said all 13 people have been accounted for and that one of them was injured. The injured person is going to be taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center.

Colclough said the rig owned by Mariner Energy was still on fire as of 11 a.m. and that reports are that it wasn?t an active well.

...Apache spokesman Bob Dye said the platform is in shallow water. The platform was identified as Vermilion 308 A, according to Mariner.

Responding to an oil spill in shallow water is much easier than in deepwater, where crews depend on remote-operated vehicles access equipment on the sea floor.

The platform is about 200 miles west of BP's blown out Macondo well. On Friday, BP was expected to begin the process of removing the cap and failed blow-out preventer, another step toward completion of a relief well that would complete the choke of the well...

...The offshore site, believed to be about 340 feet above the ocean floor according to preliminary records reviewed from the lease owner, is not one of the deep water sites affected by the Obama administration's moratorium on deepwater drilling.

The Coast Guard says the site is a producing well, though some other reports said it is "not in production."

Coast Guard responds to oil platform explosion
NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to a report of 13 people in the water following an oil platform explosion in block 380 approximately 90 miles south of Vermillion Bay, La., at about 9:19 a.m.

Watchstanders at the Eighth Coast Guard District command center received a report from a pilot aboard a Bristow helicopter at about 10:00 a.m., stating that 13 people were in the water near an oil platform on fire. All 13 people were wearing immersion suits.

The 13 people in the water were picked up by the OSV Crystal Clear and taken to another platform. Coast Guard helicopters are being utilized to transport the rescued to Terrebonne General Hospital.

Currently responding are:

Five MH-65C rescue helicopters and cres from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans;

Four MH-65C rescue helicopters and crews from Coast Guard Air Station Houston;

HC-144 Guardian aircraft from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Ala;

Coast Guard Cutters Decisive, Skipjack, Manta, Harry Claiborne;

Their conditions are unknown.

...The Coast Guard is saying that a mile-long oil sheen is spreading from the site of the Mariner Energy-owned platform.

?At 9:19 a.m., the Coast Guard received a call from neighboring platform was that platform 380 completely engulfed in flames,? said Gov. Bobby Jindal during an afternoon update on the fire.

As of 1 p.m., Jindal said that fire was still burning, though Mariner officials had told his office that the blaze had been contained and nearly burned out.

Mariner informed the governor that the platform had seven active wells on the platform, and that one of the seven wells caught fire, said Jindal...

No reports of oil leaking from platform, cause of fire unknown

The Coast Guard initially reported that an oil sheen a mile long and 100 feet wide had begun to spread, but hours later said crews were unable to find any spill.


Coast Guard Petty Officer Steve Lehmann in New Orleans said Friday morning that an 87-foot Coast Guard cutter patrolling the area has not reported any signs of leaks. A helicopter was to survey the site later in the day.

Houston-based Mariner did not know what caused the fire. The 13 workers who were pulled from the water told rescuers that there was a blast on board, but Mariner's Patrick Cassidy said he considered what happened a fire, not an explosion.

A Homeland Security update obtained by The Associated Press said the platform was producing 58,800 gallons of oil and 900,000 cubic feet of gas per day. The platform can store 4,200 gallons of oil.

Shaw said workers told him the blast was so sudden that they did not have time to get into lifeboats. They did not mention what might have caused it.

"They just said there was an explosion, there was a fire," Shaw said. "It happened very quick."

Second Mariner Energy platform catches fire

A small fire broke out Thursday morning on an abandoned platform in the Gulf of Mexico owned by Mariner Energy, the same Houston company that owned a platform that caught fire last week, forcing 13 workers to jump into the ocean.

The accident occurred Thursday around 8:55 a.m., about 109 miles south of Lafayette in 223 feet of water, according to a statement from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, which is investigating the fire. Two workers were on the platform, but neither needed rescue.
