10 diagnosed cases of virus on Boulder campus, 20 to 25 suspected cases

The University of Colorado had a small outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease at the beginning of the semester, but health officials say they believe the worst has passed.

Officials at Wardenburg Health Services, the on-campus health center for the Boulder campus, diagnosed 10 cases of the viral illness, which causes painful sores in the mouth, on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Sores can also appear on other parts of the body and are usually accompanied by a fever and a sore throat.

There were between 20 and 25 additional students that health officials suspect had the illness, but were not officially diagnosed with it, according to Stacy Farman, infection prevention coordinator at Wardenburg...

Eleven cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been reported in the CSU student body since the start of the semester according to Anne Hudgens, executive director of the the CSU Health Network.
