Close watch on situation in next 7 days: Collector

PUNE: District collector Chandrakant Dalvi on Saturday said the swine flu situation in the city is being observed closely on the backdrop of
widespread crowding in the last three days of the Ganesh festival.

Dalvi said a close watch will be kept for patients displaying swine flu symptoms in the next 7 days, which is the incubation period of the H1N1 virus.

The collector pointed out that although the public largely refrained from crowding during Ganeshotsav, the last three days of the festival saw people thronging public places. "As of now, we have not registered any impact of the gathering. However, we will be monitoring the situation and also looking out for suspected swine flu cases."

Dalvi appealed to citizens to visit screening centres in case of symptoms like sneezing, coughing and flu. He added that the number of people visiting screening centres in the district has risen sharply in the last two days.

Outlining the current situation, Dalvi said, "There are 11 patients at the isolation ICUs of various government and private hospitals in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Of these, five are on ventilators and in a critical condition."

"As many as 5,000 people visited screening centres on Saturday, of which 149 were found to be suspected cases and given Tamiflu. Three positive cases were detected on Saturday. Besides, 49 patients were discharged from various hospitals in the city on Saturday," he stated.

The number of people screened across the district so far has reached 3.23 lakh (1 lakh = 100,000), while 15,304 have been administered Tamiflu. As many as 904 people have been found H1N1 positive in the district so far, Dalvi said.

Dalvi said the district administration, along with the city unit of the Indian Medical Association, has organised workshops for doctors working at the primary health centres and rural hospitals. "The aim is to strengthen the rural health care system. Doctors working in the rural areas that have registered H1N1 deaths will be given priority."

Thirteen die of swine flu

NEW DELHI: As many as 13 people died of the A (H1N1) influenza in the country in the past 24 hours taking the toll to 131. So far this is the highest number of deaths reported in a day .

As many as 93 confirmed cases of swine flu were also reported from across the country.

With this the cumulative number of flu cases has touched 4,738.

The highest number of deaths was reported from Karnataka (7), followed by Maharashtra (3) and Andhra Pradesh (2) . One death was also reported from Gujarat.

As far as the fresh positive cases are concerned, Delhi alone saw 35 in the past 24 hours, Maharashtra 19, Karnataka 17, Gujarat 5 and Chhattisgarh one.

Uttar Pradesh has seen 65 positive swine flu cases between August 31 and September 5, according to a spokesperson of the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

Of the 93 new cases, only two are imported cases with patients having a history of foreign travel while the rest are indigenous cases.

MUMBAI: With swine flu claiming 20 lives in the state in the last 8 days, the government health machinery is once again on high alert. Additional
chief secretary (health) Sharwaree Gokhale admitted at a press meet on Friday that the situation was ?grim??.

Officials attribute the sudden spurt in deaths to a change in weather as well as the intermingling of huge crowds at the Ganpati festival, a fear which the government had expressed weeks ago. On September 3, the number of deaths in the state was 57, but after the Ganpati immersion, 20 more people succumbed, taking the total death toll to 77 on Friday. The majority of deaths are in the urban areas of Pune and Mumbai. ?Our fear has come true,?? Gokhale said.

Flu forces closure of Bandra school

Arya Vidya Mandir School in Bandra has been shut until September 18 after two students tested positive for swine flu on Friday. Authorities said the school would be fumigated before
it is reopened.

Bhiwandi woman dies, city toll 18

A 35-year-old Bhiwandi woman, Fatima Momin, has become Mumbai?s 18th swine flu victim. Momin, who had a history of diabetes and hypertension, died at Nair Hospital, where she was rushed in a critical state, on Friday.
