Clay County reports first H1N1 flu death
Victim was 30-year-old woman

A 30-year-old Clay County woman has died of the H1N1 flu, the county's first death attributed to what was formerly called swine flu.

The Clay County Health Department reported the death in a news release issued Friday night.

?This tragic loss is a painful reminder that the flu is present throughout our community,? said Nancy Mills, administrator of the Health Department, in the release. ?We urge all residents and visitors to continue with recommended precautions to avoid illness and the spread of infection.?

No other information about the victim or the circumstances of her contracting the illness was released.

The Clay Health Department continues "enhanced surveillance and outreach to physicians, hospitals and other health care professions," Mills said in the release. Also, the agency continues to monitor local emergency room and walk-in clinics for flu-like illness in the community.

The county Health Department and the Florida Department of Health recommend people with respiratory illness stay home, and away from work or school to avoid spreading infections, including the flu, to others in the community, according to the release. Other precautions are to avoid close contact with people who are coughing or otherwise appear ill; people experiencing cough, fever and fatigue, possibly along with diarrhea and vomiting, should contact their physician, according to the release.
