Salmonella prompts recall of pasta salads from Hy-Vee

Yesterday the grocery chain Hy-Vee recalled packaged pasta salads linked to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak, according to both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
So far 21 people in five states have been sickened in the outbreak, many after eating the supermarket's "Spring Pasta Salad," sold in in all Hy-Vee grocery stores in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Iowa has reported the most cases, with 8, followed by Minnesota (7), Nebraska (4), and 1 each in South Dakota and Missouri. Patients' ages range from 5 years to 89, with a median age of 50, and 65% are women. Five people have been hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. Symptom-onset dates range from Jun 23 to Jul 3.
During epidemiologic interviews, 10 (77%) of 13 people reported eating Spring Pasta Salad from Hy-Vee grocery stores in Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota.
The pasta salad is sold in 1- and 3-pound containers, and at Hy-Vee's deli counters. According to the CDC, the recalled pasta salad contained shell pasta, carrots, celery, cucumbers, green pepper, onion, and mayonnaise. All recalled products have expiration dates ranging from Jun 22 to Aug 3.
[h=3]Voluntary recall in more than 200 stores[/h] "Consumers who have recalled Hy-Vee Spring Pasta Salad should not eat it. Return it to the store for a refund or throw it away. Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell recalled Hy-Vee Spring Pasta Salad," the CDC said. The agency also noted that any illnesses occurring on or after Jul 1 may not yet be reported.
According to the FDA, Hy-Vee's recall is voluntary, and happened 1 day after the store decided to pull the pasta salads from store shelves.
"Out of an abundance of caution, Hy-Vee voluntarily removed the product last night from all of its shelves and service cases as soon as the grocery chain was notified about the situation," the FDA said.
Hy-Vee is based in West Des Moines, Iowa, and has 244 stores in the Midwest.
Salmonella is a foodborne illness that causes intestinal pain, diarrhea, and fever. The outbreak strain is Salmonella Sandiego, the CDC said.
