[h=3]Stuffed-chicken Salmonella outbreak grows to 9 cases, 4 states[/h] A Salmonella outbreak linked to stuffed, raw chicken entrees that might appear to be cooked has grown to nine cases, as new individual cases in Minnesota and Illinois push the number of affected states to four, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in an update yesterday.
The agency reported seven outbreak cases on Jul 16.
Illness-onset dates range from Apr 5 to Jul 5, and patients range in age from 4 to 82 years, with a median age of 46. Three of six people for whom information is available have been hospitalized, but none have died.
Minnesota has now confirmed six cases of salmonellosis, and Oklahoma and Wisconsin have one each, in addition to the case in Illinois.
The outbreak is attributed to entrees made by Barber Foods of Portland, Me., the CDC said. The company has recalled more than 1.7 million pounds of products because of the outbreak.

[h=3]NIAID awards $1.4 million for developing broad-spectrum antivirals[/h] The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded Seattle-based Kineta, Inc., $1.4 million to develop its broad-spectrum antiviral therapeutics to combat Ebola, influenza, and other viruses, the company announced yesterday in a press release.
The contract has options to expand to up to $2.52 million over 2 to 3 years.
Kineta's small-molecule compounds have been shown in animal tests to inhibit Ebola, influenza A and B, dengue, West Nile, Lassa fever, respiratory syncytial virus, and coronaviruses, the company said. The compounds target processes that activate the innate human immune transcription factor, IRF-3, which drives antiviral gene expression to suppress viral replication, according to the release.
"Direct acting antivirals typically have selective action against only a single virus with a high risk of eliciting drug resistance. Host-directed antiviral drugs will be broad spectrum with limited susceptibility to drug resistance," said Kristin Bedard, PhD, Kineta's head of virology.
