Ebola sickens 2 more in DRC's latest outbreak, 79 total, with 33 deaths
Two more Ebola cases were confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) outbreak in Equateur province, bringing the total to 79, the World Health Organization (WHO) African regional office said today in a Twitter update.
No new deaths were reported, keeping the fatality count at 33.
The outbreak was first detected in early June at about the same time the large outbreak centered in North Kivu province was declared over. The latest event marks the DRC's 11[SUP]th[/SUP] Ebola outbreak, and is occurring in the same region where a short-lived outbreak in 2018 resulted in 54 cases and 33 deaths.

In a related development, the United States on August 7 announced more than $7.5 million in additional humanitarian aid to help battle the Equateur province outbreak, according to a statement from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). It said the extra funding will also boost support for Ebola survivors and response capacity in the eastern DRC where a large outbreak centered in North Kivu province was declared over earlier this summer.

244 more sickened in Salmonella outbreak linked to onions
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced late last week 244 more cases of illnesses caused by Salmonella Newport, bringing the outbreak total to 640 from 43 states.
The outbreak has resulted in 85 hospitalizations so far, and no deaths. Thomson International Inc., the distributor of the onions, issued a recall on the vegetables on Aug 1, but warns the onions may be in premade food products, including soups, salads, and veggie mixes.
"Onion types include red, white, yellow, and sweet yellow varieties. Other companies have also issued recalls of foods, like chicken salads, made with recalled onions," the CDC said.
Illness onset dates range from Jun 19 to Jul 23. Since its last update on Jul 31, 10 new states have reported illnesses, including Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, and West Virginia.
Utah has the biggest case count with 90, followed by Oregon (85), and California (76).

New Hampshire reports season's second Jamestown Canyon virus case
New Hampshire recently reported is second Jamestown Canyon virus infection of the year, an adult from Bow in the south-central part of the state who wasn't hospitalized but experienced fever and mild neurological symptoms.
In a press release, the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (NHDHHS) said arboviral risk for Bow is now considered high, and the risk for four surrounding towns has been increased to moderate.
The disease was first reported in the United States in 2013, and cases have increased mainly due to better recognition and increased testing. The latest case is the 11[SUP]th[/SUP] case to be reported from New Hampshire.
Jamestown Canyon virus is transmitted from mosquitoes, and though the disease is found throughout most of the United States, more than half of all cases have come from Minnesota and Wisconsin, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most infections are reported from April through September.
