CIDRAP - Mumps epidemic tops 1,000 cases

"The source of the outbreak is unknown, according to the CDC. The strain circulating in the United States is genotype G, the same as the strain circulating in the United Kingdom, where more than 100,000 cases have occurred in the past few years, Gerberding said. But at this point there is no proof that the situations are linked, she said."

Is there a balance somewhere between proof and common sense?

UK - 100,000 plus cases over the past few years
US - Worst outbreak in over 20 years

Next year..... United States 100,000 cases? It is spreading like a slow but steady wildfire.

Would I be safe to assume that genotype G was the seventh form of mutation in the virus that was identified?
