New H7N9 case in China; Flu risk on planes

China reports new H7N9 case
Health officials in Anhui province reported a new H7N9 avian flu case in a 55-year-old man, according to a health department notice translated and posted yesterday by FluTrackers, an infectious disease message board.
The man, from Lu'an city in the western part of the province, was diagnosed as having the disease on Apr 26 and is hospitalized in Hefei. His condition was not listed, nor were any poultry contacts. Anhui is near the eastern coast of China, just west of Shanghai.
The new case brings the overall H7N9 outbreak total to 433, according to a case list kept by FluTrackers. So far 297 cases have been reported in the current second wave of the outbreak, compared with 136 in the first wave last spring.

ECDC publishes guidelines on airline flu contact tracing
As part of its Risk Assessment Guidance for Infectious Diseases Transmitted on Aircraft (RAGIDA) series, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) today published guidelines on the risk assessment and contract tracing of airline passengers who have contracted or possibly been exposed to influenza.
The agency brought together expert panels that included public health authorities, flu scientists, experts in microbiology and mathematic modeling, and aviation experts, as well as ECDC and World Health Organization representatives. The experts combined evidence from the scientific literature as well as their own expertise to develop the 59-page flu guidelines.
Today's technical report covers case definitions, criteria for a risk assessment, suggested approaches for contact tracing. Sections detail seasonal flu, novel influenza with pandemic potential or seasonal flu with increased virulence, and flu viruses with zoonotic potential, such as swine flu and avian flu.
RAGIDA was formed in 2007 and produced a report in June 2009 covering disease transmission in general, with short sections on specific diseases. In November that year the group produced more specific guidance for tuberculosis, SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), and invasive meningococcal disease.
