Global flu activity stays at low levels

Global flu activity remains at low levels, with slight increases in China and South America, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in its weekly update yesterday.

The agency said influenza activity remained at low levels in North America, Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia. Flu activity continues to decline in southern and southeastern Asia, as well, except for Singapore, which noted an increase.

Flu was at inter-seasonal levels in most nations of eastern Asia, the WHO said, except for slightly increased activity in southern China, mainly owing to H3N2.

Flu activity remains low in the Southern Hemisphere, except in some countries in temperate South America that are showing increased flu-like illness and an increase in detection of flu viruses.

Of 1,838 samples tested in the first half of June in WHO labs, 1,345 (73%) were positive for influenza A and 493 (27%) for influenza B. Of the 1,095 influenza A viruses that were subtyped, 888 (81%) were H3N2 and 207 (19%) were 2009 H1N1.

Zhejiang province bans urban live-poultry sales

Zhejiang province has banned live-poultry markets in urban areas to curb the spread of avian flu, according to a report today from Xinhua, China's state news agency. The ban goes into effect tomorrow.

The province was hardest hit during the first wave of human H7N9 infections in the spring of 2013, and agriculture officials used temporary market closures to slow the spread of the virus. Poultry market closures were credited for decreasing the spread of H7N9 to people in other parts of China, as well.

The province's new policy allows only dead and plucked poultry to be sold in urban markets, according to Xinhua. It said Zhejiang's agriculture officials are pushing for standardized poultry production procedures that allow meat to be traced to its source and will develop a process that can kill and pluck large quantities of birds.

Many people in China prefer to buy live poultry, because they can assess if the birds appear healthy.
