Thousands of chickens lost to H5N1 in North Korea
North Korean chicken farms have been hit by H5N1 avian flu, with tens of thousands of birds dying or being culled as a result, according to a story today by the South Korean Yonhap News Agency.
The outbreak, first reported last month on a farm in Pyongyang, the capital, is causing "extensive economic damage," says the story, citing the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) of North Korea. Movement of poultry is being limited, quarantines have been established, and culled birds are being buried, KCNA said.
The Yonhap story notes that avian flu caused "extensive damage" in North Korea last year, presumably referring to the H5N8 strain. The article added that South Korea has culled more than 10 million poultry to prevent the spread of "the highly contagious virus," which is also presumably H5N8. That strain first surfaced in South Korea in wild geese.
South Korea's recent outbreak is the first there since 2011.
