[h=3]Nigeria sees additional widespread H5N1 poultry outbreaks[/h] The string of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu outbreaks in Nigeria continues, with reports posted yesterday by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) of one in the southwest part of the country and five in the central and north central areas.
The outbreak in the southwest involved 52-week-old laying hens on a farm in Ikpoba Okha in Edo state. In the flock of 2,000 hens, 410 became infected and died; the remaining 1,590 were destroyed. The outbreak is blamed on poor biosecurity on the farm. Beyond destruction of the noninfected birds, the farm was disinfected and quarantined.
Outbreaks involving four farms in central and north central Nigeria were in the towns of Kumbotso, Katsina, and Dutsin Ma in the northern state of Katsina, and the town of Jos in the central state of Plateau. An outbreak involving a backyard flock was in the town of Ungogo in Kano state in the north.
The birds were all layers of varying ages; flocks ranged from 120 to nearly 9,000 birds in size. Among a total 11,894 susceptible birds on the five premises, 328 cases occurred, all fatal; the remaining 11,566 birds were destroyed. All locations were quarantined and disinfected, and surveillance was instituted outside the containment and/or protection zone.
A resurgence of H5N1 has occurred in several parts of Africa over the past year, with Nigeria the hardest hit nation.
