Chronic wasting disease found in 2 Missouri deer

The Department of Conservation said Tuesday the two positive test results came from 1,077 tissue samples taken from deer killed in north-central Missouri. Both positive test results were from adult bucks taken in Macon County.

The open houses will be held in Macon County Saturday from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the New Cambria High School, 501 S. Main St., and in Linn County on Feb. 18 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Bucklin Community Center, 202 E. Fourth St.

In northwest Missouri, officials schedule town meeting about rare deer diseased

Jason Sumners, a deer biologist with the department, said once the disease gets into a deer herd, there is little more than can be done to prevent the disease.

?It is a fatal neurological disease, and it slowly accumulates not only in the animal, but in the population,? Sumners said. ?Over a number of years, [it is] a slow drain on the population.?

Sumners says the disease ? which is not transmissible to humans or many farm animals such as cattle ? has been detected in five free ranging deer in northwest Macon County, Mo. There, the department has scheduled holding a meeting with landowners on Saturday to discuss how the disease can be best contained.
