Cholera makes a comeback in Kerala

Dreaded waterborne disease cholera has made a comeback in Kerala disproving claims that it has been totally eradicated from the State long ago. After confirmation of the disease in two children and several persons showing symptoms of cholera, the Public Health authorities have moved into action.
Cholera was confirmed last weekend in two children aged eight months and two years in Puthiyathura on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram city, Kerala?s capital. In the past three days, ten more persons showing symptoms similar to those of the two children sought treatment at the Kolluvila Public Health Centre near Puthiyathura, spreading panic in the region.
The coastal belt between Puthiyathura and Kovalam, one of the most famous tourist destinations of South India, is thickly populated but does not have proper sanitation facilities. This is considered as the prime reason for the spread of the disease though the authorities had first aired suspicion that the disease could have been spread to this area from Tamil Nadu.

One more case of cholera has been identified at Puthiyathura, this time the grandmother of the two children who were earlier found to be afflicted with the disease. However, Kochuthresya?s symptoms were mild and she was allowed to go home after treatment at the Pulluvila Primary Health Centre.
The first case was that of nine-month-old Saira, who came to the hospital with severe diarrhoea. ??She came with severe dehydration and we sent some samples for analysis. She was admitted last Monday and discharged on Friday. It was only after discharge that we got the test results and identified the problem as cholera,?? said Dr Lalitha Kailas, head of the Paediatrics Department at SAT Hospital.

Puthiyathura under Cholera grip, four cases confirmed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Puthiyathura is fast becoming the epicenter of a cholera epidemic with two more fresh cases being reported. With this, the total number of cases reported from the region has risen to four. All the victims are children.

The two cases confirmed on Monday were the children who were earlier suspected to have the disease. The doctors camping in the region said that more number of cholera cases cannot be ruled out since many people from the region have reportedly been showing symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea. "Lack of pure drinking water is a major issue. We have advised them to use only boiled water,'' said district medical officer (DMO) Dr T Peethambaran.
