Cholera epidemic of 1820
Published on page A22 of the October 9, 2006 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer
ON OCT. 9, 1820, a Filipino mob massacred 39 foreigners in Manila on the suspicion that they had poisoned the Pasig River, wells and other water sources to rid the country of Tagalogs.
A cholera epidemic was raging back then and Filipinos were wondering why no foreigners had come down with the disease.
Even French scientists who offered medical assistance were accused of administering poison to the sick.
For some reason, Spaniards and Portuguese were spared from the slaughter.
