Geneva:

The risk of cholera spreading in Lebanon is "very high", the World Health Organization warned Wednesday, after a case of the acute and potentially deadly diarrhoeal infection was detected in the conflict-hit country.

The WHO highlighted the risk of cholera spreading among hundreds of thousands of people displaced since Israel escalated an air campaign against Hezbollah and launched a ground offensive intended to push the group back from its northern border with Lebanon.

"If the cholera outbreak ... spreads to the new displaced people, it might spread very fast," Abdinasir Abubakar, WHO's representative in Lebanon, told reporters in an online news conference...

Press release

On October 14, the Ministry of Public Health was notified of a possible case of cholera. As a result, the epidemiological surveillance program began investigating the case by collecting clinical and environmental samples and conducting field visits. The case was confirmed on October 16 by isolating the bacteria in a reference laboratory. It is caused by Vibrio cholerae type O1.

The case is of Lebanese nationality and went to the hospital on October 14 due to severe watery diarrhea and dehydration. The patient has no history of travel. She is from the town of Samounieh in Akkar.

The Ministry of Public Health is investigating the case, collecting samples from contacts and searching for other cases in the patient's vicinity.

The investigation also includes searching for water contamination. A number of water samples were collected from Samounieh and Mishmesh and sent to reference laboratories.

The national cholera plan will be activated and containment measures will be initiated.
