Re: Chinese Court Sentences Bird Flu Whistle-Blower
As a word of caution, it may be a coincidence that having alerted the authorities about the problem (bringing attention from officialdom in it's wake), that this farmer has been prosecuted for associated crimes. A similar event happened in the UK when a wild bird trader was discovered to have H5N1 in some of his charges, yet few believe that the UK government was acting out of malice.
I have no evidence either way, and remain deeply sceptical that China's bird flu numbers are anyway close to be credible, but 2+2 sometimes do not make four when you only have half the facts.
China needs to urgently address this 'credibility gap' by releasing all sequences; lifting their reporting restrictions; stop vaccinating poultry; and establish transparency on all aspects of this developing situation. The 'West' (and the WHO) are not blameless in permitting the Chinese to continue in their ambiguous relationship with H5N1: They have the means to 'force' China to comply, but lack the political will to do so. This has to change if the world isn't to discover a novel virus exists only after it escapes the confines of China (as SARS did).
