JINAN, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- A woman had died of bird flu in east China's Shandong Province, provincial health authorities reported on Sunday.
The 27-year-old woman surnamed Zhang, who lived in Jinan, the provincial capital, fell ill on Jan. 5 and went to hospital when got worse, said an official of the provincial health department. She died at 6:40 p.m. on Saturday. The national disease prevention and control center on Sunday confirmed that she was infected with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

A woman in the Chinese province of Shandong has died of the H5N1 variant of the bird flu virus. This is the second death as a result of bird flu in a month. The 27-year-old woman fell ill two weeks ago. The health authorities in the eastern province have confirmed that she was infected with the potentially fatal variant of the virus.

Nearly 250 people have died as a result of the H5N1 strain of bird flu since 2003. The disease is transmitted by direct contact with infected birds or their excrement.

BEIJING - A woman has died of bird flu in east China's Shandong province, state media said Sunday, reporting the nation's second death from the disease this month.
The 27-year-old, surnamed Zhang, fell ill on January 5 and died Saturday evening, the Xinhua news agency said, citing the Shandong provincial health department.
The national disease prevention and control centre on Sunday confirmed that she was infected with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, according to Xinhua.
It brings to 22 the number of people in China who have died from the virus since 2003.
Earlier this month, a 19-year-old woman died of bird flu in Beijing -- the country's first fatal case in nearly a year -- after handling ducks she had bought in a market.
The report of Zhang's death came a day after Chinese state media said that a two-year-old girl had fallen ill from bird flu. The toddler was reported to be in a critical condition in Sunday evening primetime TV news.
People who were in close contact with Zhang are now under close observation, but so far no one has fallen ill, the China News Service said.
China has reported the case to the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as health authorities in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, according to the China News Service.
Bird flu outbreaks tend to happen in the winter months, when low temperatures create more favorable conditions for the virus to spread.
Prior to this month's cases, and in addition to the fatalities, 10 Chinese were known to have contracted bird flu but survived.
According to the WHO, about 250 people have died from bird flu worldwide since 2003.
Scientists fear the virus could mutate to jump easily from human to human, potentially sparking a global pandemic.

The above comments describe the third confirmed H5N1 case in China this month (see updated map). This case is in addition to the fatality in Beijing (19F) and the critical case originating in Hunan (2F) and all three follow confirmation of two bird outbreaks in Jiangsu last month. The outbreaks in Jiangsu involved asymptomatic poultry infected with clade 7, a clade that is significantly different than the clade 1 and clade 2 targets of avian and human vaccines, raising concerns that clade 7 is silently spreading in China and cause fatal infections this month.

BEIJING, Jan 18 (Reuters) - A woman in eastern China has died and a two year-old girl is critically ill in northern China after becoming infected with bird flu, state media said on Sunday.
The 27-year-old woman from Jinan, capital of China's Shandong province, died on Saturday after falling ill on Jan. 5, Xinhua said, citing an unnamed official with the provincial health department. It gave her surname as Zhang.
The two-year-old girl, surnamed Peng, was found ill on Jan. 7 in central Hunan Province and taken to a hospital in her home province of Shanxi on Jan. 11, Xinhua news agency said, citing an unnamed official with the provincial health department.
After not reporting a single human infection in almost a year, China has now confirmed three cases in two weeks.
Health authorities said earlier this month a woman infected with bird flu had died in Beijing after buying ducks at a market in Hebei province, which surrounds the Chinese capital, sparking emergency checks of local poultry markets.
Experts said the case was not unexpected as the virus is more active during the cooler months between October and March, but pointed to holes in surveillance of the virus in poultry.
China's Agriculture Ministry said last week it had found no bird flu cases among poultry in Beijing or other areas surrounding the city during checks after the woman's death.
The H5N1 virus remains largely a disease among birds but experts fear it could change into a form that is easily transmitted among humans, and spark a pandemic that could kill millions of people worldwide.
With the world's biggest poultry population and hundreds of millions of backyard birds, China is seen as critical in the fight to contain bird flu.
GIRL CRITICAL
The national disease prevention and control center on Sunday confirmed Zhang, the 27-year-old woman, had been infected with bird flu, Xinhua said, but provided no other details.
China's Health Ministry said in a statement on its website (www.moh.gov.cn) that authorities had confirmed on Saturday that the two-year-old girl had been infected with the virus.
The statement did not say how the girl had become infected. There have not been any reports of outbreaks of the virus among birds in Hunan since May 2007.
"Currently, the girl's condition is critical. Shanxi health departments are currently fighting to save her with the guidance of a team of health experts," the Health Ministry said.
"All people who have had close contact with her are under strict medical observation," it said. It added that the World Health Organisation (WHO), and health authorities in Hong Kong, Macau and some other countries had been notified.
Calls placed to health departments in Shanxi province went unanswered.
WHO said China's Health Ministry had notified them of the toddler's infection, but could not provide more details. "We are staying in close contact with the Health Ministry," a spokeswoman from WHO's China office told Reuters.
Since the H5N1 virus resurfaced in Asia in 2003, it has infected 391 people, killing 247 of them, according to WHO figures released in mid-December.

Gene sequencing by the National Avian Influenza Reference Laboratory indicated that this virus is very similar to the avian influenza virus variant isolated in Shanxi in 2006.

The above comments are from the OIE report submitted by China for the two H5N1 outbreaks in Jiangsu, China (see updated map). Although 376,998 birds were culled, there were no fatalities listed in the December 26 report because the birds were asymptomatically infected. This raised concerns that similar infections at other farms led to the silent spread of clade 7, which was the clade in Jiangsu as well as Shanxi in 2006 and other poultry outbreaks in areas surrounding Beijing, as well as fecal samples from Hunan in 2006. There were also reports of clade 7 in Vietnam in 2008 prior to the outbreaks in Jiangsu.

The Jiangsu outbreak was followed by the confirmed case (19F) in Beijing, who had purchased and gutted ducks in Hebei and developed symptoms on Dec 24. It is unlikely that these birds had symptoms, and a survey of birds near Beijing failed to identify dead or dying poultry. However, a health care worker in Beijing did develop symptoms, raising concerns of increased efficiency of transmission to humans.

The Beijing case(s) were followed by the fatality in Shandong (27F), who developed symptoms on January 5. The possible exposure has not been disclosed.

These two cases were followed by the case (2F) in Hunan, who is in critical condition in Shanxi. Surveys of markets in Hunan and Shanxi failed to identify dead or dying poultry.

Thus, there has been no linkage of any of the three confirmed H5N1 to dead or dying poultry. However, vaccination of poultry with a poorly matched vaccine would yield asymptomatic birds shedding H5N1 virus, which would facilitate spread in immunized birds that could lead to fatal human infections.

More information on the H5N1 isolated from the three cases this month would be useful.

Clade 7 is readily distinguished from clade 1 or clade 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3, and the distinction can be seen in the HA cleavage site (clade 7 has a G at the third position instead of an R or S).

She came down with avian flu symptoms on January 5 and died on January 17.

The centre is liaising with the ministry to get more information about the case.
