Huang bought nine ducks at the Yanjiaoqingong Market in Langfang City of Beijing's neighboring Hebei Province Dec. 19, then cleaned the ducks' internal organs before giving three ducks to other people, the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau said.
"According to the initial investigation, a total of 13 people have eaten the duck and Huang is the only one who fell ill," Zhao said. "We had thoroughly combed all stands in the market."
He said the ducks' origin was traced to Jixian County in Tianjin Municipality.
No bird flu case had been found in Langfang City so far, a spokesperson with China's Ministry of Agriculture told Xinhua.
The Beijing Municipal Health Bureau said 116 people were in close contact with the victim. One healthcare professional in contact with Huang contracted bird flu, but recovered, the bureau said.
Beijing officials reported the incident to the World Health Organization, as well as health authorities in Hong Kong and Macao. Official also have begun bird flu prevention and control measures.

The timeline for the H5 PCR positive culler in South Korea was also short. If dose is low and treatment is quick, resolution is fast. Similar resolution has been seen in Indonesia.

The confirmed cases are those that have longer course, and in many countries this is associated with a high CFR (because mild cases are not tested on viral load is too low to detect).

China finds no bird flu outbreak after new death

BEIJING, Jan 8 (Reuters) - China's Agriculture Ministry said on Thursday that it had found no bird flu cases amongst poultry in Beijing or areas surrounding the city after a woman in the capital died of the H5N1 form of the virus.

Experts had fanned out to Beijing's neighbouring city of Tianjin and Heibei province, which surrounds the capital and where the dead woman had bought ducks, the ministry said in a statement on its website (www.agri.gov.cn).

"After tests for the virus and an epidemiological investigation, no trace of the bird flu virus was found in these three areas," it said.

The 19-year-old died of the H5N1 virus after gutting ducks, which experts say highlights the role and risks of waterfowl in the transmission of the virus to humans.

It was the first such death in the country in almost a year, and the 21st to date in China.

The virus is generally more active during the cooler months between October and March, although the new Chinese case points to holes in surveillance of the virus in poultry.

Experts also say that many species of ducks are natural reservoirs of the virus and unlike chickens, they show no signs of disease.

China's Agriculture Ministry said it would step up an inoculation campaign and surveillance for the disease.

"The ministry has many times demanded that every part of the country must maintain a high state of alert to prevent the spread of bird flu and other animal viruses," it said.

The H5N1 strain remains largely a disease among birds but experts fear it could change into a form that is easily transmitted among people and kill millions of people worldwide.

Beijing authorities have banned all live poultry from other parts of the country from entering the capital, after a woman died from the H5N1 bird flu virus on Monday morning.

"Only poultry certified safe by the city's animal disease control authorities will be allowed into the city," the Xinhua News Agency reported.

The authorities yesterday disinfected Hebei's Yanjiaoxinggong market in Sanhe city, where Huang had bought the ducks with two other people from Fujian. The market's five shops selling live poultry have also been closed.

The Sanhe city government has reportedly set up a task force to deal with bird flu prevention, quarantine and the market's management.

Similarly, health authorities have examined 15 people handling live poultry trade in the market and all were confirmed to be free of the disease, while residents who had been diagnosed with fever have been inspected.
