China - Shanghai reports first official COVID-19 deaths in weeks-long lockdown - April 18, 2022

Hong Kong (CNN)Shanghai reported three Covid-19 deaths Monday, the first officially announced fatalities from a raging Omicron outbreak that has infected hundreds of thousands of people despite a government-enforced city-wide lockdown.

Three elderly people aged between 89 and 91 died from Covid on Sunday, after their condition deteriorated in hospital, the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission said in a statement Monday.

All three were unvaccinated and had underlying health conditions such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure, according to officials.

　　On April 18, Shanghai added 3,084 new confirmed cases of local new coronary pneumonia (including 974 confirmed cases of previously asymptomatic infections), 17,332 local asymptomatic infections, and 19,442 new local positive infections. No new overseas cases were added. There were 2 new cases of imported asymptomatic infections in imported new coronary pneumonia cases.
　　From 0 to 24:00 on April 18, 2022, 7 new local deaths were reported. The age ranged from 60 to 101 years old, of which 6 cases were over 75 years old, with coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension grade 3, sequelae of cerebral infarction, cardiac function grade Ⅲ, cerebral infarction, hypoalbuminemia and other serious underlying diseases. One case (60 years old) under 75 years old was complicated with traumatic brain herniation, traumatic subdural hemorrhage, multiple cerebral contusions, traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage, and central diabetes insipidus. The above 7 people's condition worsened after being admitted to hospital, and they died after the rescue failed. The direct cause of death was caused by the underlying disease.

Shanghai COVID-19 death toll rises to 17

BEIJING: China reported seven COVID-19 deaths in Shanghai on Wednesday (Apr 20), raising the toll in the city to 17 fatalities as authorities struggled to rein in infections despite a gruelling, weeks-long lockdown.

The fast-spreading Omicron coronavirus variant has driven a huge spike in cases in the metropolis of 25 million people, and the government has imposed tight movement restrictions and multiple rounds of mass testing to combat the outbreak.

The lockdown has taken a heavy social and economic toll, with residents voicing their fury on social media over food shortages and lack of access to non-COVID medical care.

Lu Muying died on April 1 in a government quarantine facility in Shanghai, with her family on the phone as doctors tried to resuscitate her. She had tested positive for COVID-19 in late March and was moved there in line with government policy that all coronavirus cases be centrally isolated.

But the 99-year-old, who was just two weeks shy of her 100th birthday, was not counted as a COVID-19 death in Shanghai's official tally. In fact, the city of more than 25 million has only reported 25 coronavirus deaths despite an outbreak that has spanned nearly two months and infected hundreds of thousands of people in the world's third-largest city.

Lu's death underscores how the true extent of the virus toll in Shanghai has been obscured by Chinese authorities. Doctors told Lu's relatives she died because COVID-19 exacerbated her underlying heart disease and high blood pressure, yet she still was not counted...
