A humanitarian mission to spread love: Chinese medical team in Haiti

2010-02-09 08:45 BJT

Most of the 40 team members have participated in previous UN peacekeeping missions and many have been involved in the massive rescue efforts after the deadly 8.0-magnitude Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, which left about 87,000 people dead or missing.

In the hot and suffocating tent, a Chinese doctor would treat an average of 100 patients per day, working more than eight hours on their two-shift daily schedule.

Jeanne Laganda, a 30-year-old pregnant woman who stumbled over rubble during the quake, worried about the safety of her unborn baby. "I have belly ache all the time. Is my the baby ok? I cannot sleep," Laganda said, with tears in her eyes.

Chinese doctor Chen Shengrong told her to rest assured as the baby is in good condition after she gave her an ultrasonic test.

"Women and children are the most vulnerable, so I treat as my own sisters and children, and try my best to help them," Chen said.

"I'll be more happy if I can help relieve their pains. I hope the local people could feel the love of the Chinese people. Living in the global village, they are not alone," She added.

As a Chinese saying goes, "to teach a man to fish is better than give him a fish," Yang Zhenzhou, a renown Chinese disease-control expert, has put the Chinese wisdom into practice in quake-devastated Haiti. He and his colleagues managed to recruit 12 local volunteers and taught them how to prepare medical liquid and conduct distinction and epidemic prevention.

Before their departure, Yang left all the medicine and equipment to the locals and more important, the expertise needed to carry out basic quarantine and disease prevention.

"With this permanent local team, I can rest assured after we leave," he said.

During their brief stay, the Chinese medical team won great respect and appreciation from the local people.

"After 13 days we are leaving with the satisfaction of having fulfilled our mission of helping the Haitians," he said moments before boarding a charted plane bound for Beijing.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- China has made great efforts to provide assistance to earthquake-hit Haiti, and the Haitian people would be grateful to the Chinese government for their precious help, Haitian President Rene Preval said Sunday.
---------------------------
On Haiti's relations with China, Preval said the establishment of trade offices in each other's capital during his first presidential term was a major development in bilateral ties, and Haiti would like to push for normalization of relations on the basis of the existing trade relationship.

"Trade volume between the two countries continued to go up last year," the president said, "I would like to invite Chinese investors to Haiti to boost the bilateral trade relations."

Preval said the Haitian people would enjoy employment opportunities when capable entrepreneurs from around the globe bring their investment to Haiti.

"According to a favorable U.S. policy toward Haiti, products produced by Chinese investors' textile processing enterprises in Haiti will be exempted from U.S. customs," the president said.

Preval said he is interested in Chinese culture and news stories, and often watches China's TV programs in French. "I hope your (China's) trade representative in Haiti would invite me to be the first Haitian president to visit China," he told Xinhua.

China delivers 25 tons of medical aid to Haiti

10:43, February 09, 2010

The government of the People 's Republic of China on Monday delivered 25 tons of medical aid to quake-stricken Haiti, which included multiple types of epidemic prevention medicine.

Wang Shuping, head of the China Trade Development Office in Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, formally delivered the aid to Haitian authorities, which thanked China for showing solidarity with the 1.1 million Haitian people left homeless by the Jan. 12 earthquake. The magnitude-7.3 tremor has killed more than 200,000 people, according to Haitian government statistics.

Wang said that this was the third shipment of medical aid from China to Haiti, with the previous two arriving on Jan. 17 and 26, respectively. To date the Chinese government has delivered aid worth a total of 4.4 million dollars.

Monday's shipment included medicine needed to fight infectious diseases, as well tablets, rehydration liquids, gauze and medical alcohol. The shipment consists of 1,790 boxes with a total volume of some 120 cubic meters.

The medicine was immediately sent to Haiti's Health Ministry, which will then distribute the supplies to health centers, the International Red Cross and other medical teams that offer aid to over 300 camps.
