The latest data from the China Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that RSV continues to be prevalent, and it is time to arrange RSV vaccination!

September 13, 2025, 4:33 PM

On September 1st, a special RSV prevention event was held at Quanzhou Makere Maternity Hospital. Focusing on the prevention and control of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in infants and young children, the event provided professional prevention services to local families with infants and young children aged 0-1. This was an important public health service initiative launched in response to the RSV epidemic in southern China.

RSV has no off-season in southern China and has been the top threat to infants and young children for seven consecutive weeks.
Unlike the northern regions, where RSV is most prevalent in autumn and winter, RSV can spread year-round in southern regions such as Guangdong, Fujian, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan due to their varying temperatures and humidity. 1 According to the latest national acute respiratory infectious disease sentinel surveillance data released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the RSV test positivity rate among hospitalized severe acute respiratory infection cases in southern provinces has remained at the top for seven consecutive weeks,2 and has been in the top three for 11 consecutive weeks. Furthermore, it has held the top spot for 11 consecutive weeks among those aged 0-4 years. 2 It has become the "number one threat" to infant and young children's respiratory health.
As a common respiratory virus, RSV is no stranger to parents. Due to its high infection rate and rapid transmissibility, RSV has surpassed established players like influenza, rhinovirus, and adenovirus to become the leading viral pathogen for acute respiratory infections in children under five years old in my country. Furthermore, infants under one year old are at high risk for RSV infection and bear the heaviest burden of the disease. Severe RSV infection in infancy can have long-term health consequences, increasing the risk of future asthma by approximately threefold.
Authoritative recommendation: Infants aged 0-1 need

Recently, many parents have posted on social platforms

Shared the child's infection with respiratory syncytial
virus

Experiences of moderate to severe symptoms
Some children were admitted to the ICU

Some parents even signed a "critical illness notice
"

The reporter learned from the Children's Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University that
Recently, the positive rate in the respiratory ward is the highest
  Respiratory syncytial virus
The youngest child with pneumonia was only over one month old.

Parent: I thought it was just a common cold, but I didn’t expect it to be so serious.

In the respiratory ward, the positive rate of respiratory syncytial virus among hospitalized children has reached 40%, ranking first.

Experts explain that cases of RSV infection began to increase after the Beginning of Autumn, with a slight upward trend continuing for nearly two weeks after the start of school. While the epidemic typically begins in mid-October, this year's outbreak has begun significantly earlier. This year's RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) epidemic is expected to last longer.
Judging from outpatient cases, most children infected with respiratory syncytial virus have mild symptoms, and are generally treated with symptomatic supportive treatment and can recover within 1 to 2 weeks.
However, premature infants under 6 months old and a small number of children with weakened immunity are more likely to develop moderate to severe symptoms after infection. Severe cases can also lead to pneumonia, respiratory failure, encephalitis and even death.

It's worth noting that the dangers of RSV infection don't completely disappear once a baby is discharged from the hospital. Numerous studies have confirmed that severe RSV infection in infancy and childhood is closely associated with recurrent wheezing and asthma attacks throughout childhood and even adulthood. A single infection can impact a child's long-term respiratory health.

  Therefore, experts especially remind
If your child has a persistent high fever,
  Severe coughing, labored breathing, etc.
Seek medical attention as soon as possible
  in addition
  Strengthen protection for family members
  Avoid cross infection
  What is respiratory syncytial virus?

RSV, also known as respiratory syncytial virus, is an RNA virus in the family Pneumoviridae and genus Orthopneumovirus. People of all ages can be infected with RSV, but children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are at high risk.
Currently, there are no vaccines or effective treatments for RSV available in China.RSV can cause repeated infections and is easily transmitted within families. In the absence of vaccines or effective treatments, individuals should take preventive measures, including strengthening personal protective equipment.

Due to respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, and asthma
Children coming to Shanghai Children's Hospital for treatment
Much higher than at the end of September

Recently, the positive rate in the respiratory ward
The first one is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
Why is syncytial virus so powerful?
How to prevent and treat it?

"It is true that there are more children with fever and cough recently than in September, and the detection rate of syncytial virus is very high, but there is no need to panic, the hospital is accepting patients in an orderly manner." Cao Qing, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Shanghai Children's Medical Center affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, made everyone "rest assured" in his first sentence in an exclusive interview with Xinhua.
However, she immediately reminded that the syncytial virus specifically targets babies. Infants under one year old, especially those under six months old, are most likely to be infected and may even develop pneumonia.

This virus is so severe that some families have been infected! There have been many cases of infection in Hefei

October 10, 2025, 9:42 PM , China Security Online

According to the latest news from the Hefei Municipal Health Commission, a number of cases of respiratory syncytial virus infection have been reported in Hefei since late September. While the epidemic typically begins in mid-October, this year's outbreak has begun significantly earlier.
Recently, Ms. Wang, a resident of Hefei, experienced just this. Initially, someone in the family had some cold symptoms, and then something seemed off with their three-month-old baby. Initially, the child only had a cough, runny nose, and a low-grade fever (around 38.3°C), and the hospital prescribed some medication. Then, three days later, the baby's condition changed: labored breathing, wheezing at night, and poor feeding. Ms. Wang hurriedly took the child to the hospital again. A doctor auscultated the child's lungs, noting noticeable wheezing, consistent with the typical symptoms and history of bronchiolitis. A PCR test on a throat swab quickly confirmed syncytial virus infection.

"The number of outpatient visits has increased significantly recently compared to the previous period. The increase at Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital alone is about 20% to 30%." Wang Yu, chief physician of the pediatric respiratory department of Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital, told reporters, "Among them, a large number are infants who come to see a doctor for coughing. Doctor Wang Yu said that the onset of the disease in children is usually similar to that of a common cold, with symptoms such as a runny nose, but the cough will gradually intensify, accompanied by wheezing and varying degrees of fever. These symptoms are relatively typical.
In Shanghai, many netizens have reported that their children have contracted respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) , with some children admitted to the ICU. Reporters at Shanghai Children's Hospital learned that the number of children seeking emergency treatment for respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, and asthma has increased by approximately 30% since the end of September. RSV has been the most common virus in respiratory wards, with the youngest child suffering from pneumonia being just over a month old.

The doctor said that he had received a 5-year-old patient with respiratory syncytial virus the day before yesterday. Upon inquiry, he found that the patient's grandmother, mother and others at home also had symptoms of infection.

Based on outpatient reports, most children infected with RSV experience mild symptoms, generally receiving supportive care and recovering within one to two weeks. However, premature infants under six months of age and a small number of children with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop moderate to severe symptoms, which can lead to pneumonia, respiratory failure, encephalitis, and even death.

It's worth noting that the dangers of RSV infection don't completely disappear once a baby is discharged from the hospital. Numerous studies have confirmed that severe RSV infection in infancy is closely linked to recurrent wheezing and asthma attacks in childhood and even adulthood. A single infection can impact a child's long-term respiratory health.
Why is respiratory syncytial virus so aggressive? How can we prevent and treat it scientifically? The Hefei Municipal Health Commission invited Dr. Pan Junping, chief pediatrician at the Binhu campus of Hefei First People's Hospital, to provide a comprehensive understanding.
