BEIJING A new outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu has been found in dead poultry in China's northern region of Inner Mongolia, a state news agency reported Saturday.

The birds were found in a village near the city of Baotou and a laboratory confirmed Friday that they were carrying the H5N1 flu strain, the Xinhua News Agency said.

It didn't identify the birds or say how many were involved.

China has reported dozens of H5N1 outbreaks in its vast poultry flocks and has destroyed millions of in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus.

Baotou is about 300 miles west of Beijing, along the Huang He River. It's within some wetlands and has 4 intersecting railroad lines.

BEIJING -- An outbreak of bird flu has been identified in north China's Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, according to the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA).

The national avian influenza laboratory confirmed on Friday that the H5N1 virus was found in samples of the dead poultry in Xincheng village, Baotou City .

The H5N1 strain of bird flu had killed 985 chickens. Another 8,990 chickens had been culled to control the outbreak.
The local agricultural department had quarantined the infected area. and the outbreak was under control, the ministry said.

The last outbreak of bird flu in poultry was in Changsha, capital of central China's Hunan Province, in August.

The MOA said 1,805 ducks were killed by the disease and another 217,000 were culled.

The quarantine of the region was lifted in September 6, after no new cases were reported for 21 consecutive days.

China has reported nine outbreaks of bird flu in poultry this year, in northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, north China's Shanxi Province and Inner Mongolia, east China's Anhui Province, southwestern Guizhou and Sichuan provinces and central province of Hunan.

The previous eight outbreaks have been controlled and restrictions lifted.

and so, the fall season begins- my guess is we see a large upswing in cases all over, and this year it should be well seeded enough for Europe to have significant outbreaks.

Just my guess, the crystal ball is in the shop :)

Wasn't someone, here at FT, at one time speculating a link to railroad lines?

yes. It could potentially spread backyard flock BF. Being the predominant public transport many places, that's how folks carry home their purchases, or take some chicks to relatives. (or hide their prized breeders from a quarantine)
