This article is reprinted from Ningbo Evening News;
In the sweltering summer, air conditioning has become an essential appliance for cooling off. However, some people have ended up in the ICU due to the effects of air conditioning, requiring emergency ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) to save their lives. Doctors remind the public that this is currently the peak season for Legionnaires' disease, and people should ensure their air conditioners are properly cleaned before using them in the summer .
fever, cough
The pneumonia progressed rapidly to respiratory failure.
A while ago, as temperatures soared, Mr. Huang and his family went to a farmhouse for a summer getaway. The farmhouse turned on its air conditioning for the first time since the start of summer. Little did anyone expect that this ordinary summer retreat would lead to Mr. Huang's critical illness.
Two days after returning from the agritainment business, Mr. Huang developed a persistent fever and a severe dry cough that kept him awake all night. Noticing something was wrong, his family took him to Ningbo Medical Center Hospital, where imaging revealed a significant lung infection, leading to a diagnosis of pneumonia. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital.
The attending physician discovered that Mr. Huang's condition did not resemble typical bacterial pneumonia. Pneumonia caused by common bacterial infections is usually accompanied by yellow purulent sputum, while Mr. Huang primarily presented with a dry cough. Medical staff immediately began symptomatic treatment, but his condition not only failed to improve but rapidly deteriorated, developing into severe respiratory failure .
In this critical moment, the hospital immediately performed endotracheal intubation on Mr. Huang and transferred him to the ICU for monitoring and treatment. However, even with the assistance of a ventilator, Mr. Huang's blood oxygen saturation only remained at around 70% . It is understood that a normal person's blood oxygen saturation needs to be greater than 95, and a value below 90 is considered a high-risk condition, meaning that there are serious diseases in the respiratory and circulatory systems. Sustained low blood oxygen can damage organs throughout the body and may endanger life at any time.
ECMO saves lives
The culprit was finally identified—Legionella bacteria.
