China under threat of Swine Flu epidemic

Some sources of infection cannot be traced and are of local origin. But the WHO claims the country is ?well prepared? to contain the epidemic. So far there are 141 infections.

Hong Kong (AsiaNews/Agencies) ?The World Health Organisation has declared that China is facing a mass Swine Flu epidemic because it is unable to trace some of the sources of infection.

Mao Qunan, spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said yesterday the outbreak on the mainland had entered a new phase, in which local infections with uncertain sources were occurring and spreading in the community.

Yesterday the WHO declared a state of global pandemic asking governments to set up controls and prepare anti-viral medicines ahead of the winter season (in the Northern Hemisphere)

Since May 10 China reported cases of HINI infections, but they were immediately isolated and recognised as having been carried from abroad by people travelling from America or Mexico. Now the sources are local and there are infecting many communities.

By yesterday, the mainland had reported 141 cases of swine flu, including 16 new cases from Thursday. Sixty patients had been cured and released from hospital. There have been no reports of deaths.

Hans Troedsson, the WHO's China representative said China ?is quite well prepared? to contain the epidemic.

Experts on mainland A/H1N1 flu control

2009-06-17 13:28 BJT

Eleven new cases of A/H1N1 flu cases were reported Tuesday on the Chinese mainland. A total of 237 people have now been infected. Fortunately, no one has died. Experts are monitoring the virus for mutations and work on a vaccine continues. And, as the virus begins to spread within China, surveillance for A/H1N1 is being change from monitoring travelers to watching communities.
There are reports overseas that the virus has mutated. But Chinese experts believe it's too early for this to have happened.

Shu Yuelong, director of Chinese National Influenza Center, said, "Personally speaking, I don't think the virus will mutate a lot in a short period. That's because people's immunity to it is low, and won't affect the virus a lot. Plus, the flu virus could change slightly, but it won't happen that easily."

However, experts say a mutation will happen and close monitoring is a must.
Production of the flu vaccine is underway in China. But it will be selectively administered.

Yu HongJie, researcher of China CDC, said, "The vaccine will be mainly used for those in poor health, to lower the fatalities. So it won't be used for all people in the nation."

And, experts still need to determine the proper dose for the vaccine.
As the possibility of flu outbreak in community is high, close monitoring of neighborhoods is not the focus. Health experts are now looking at ways to increase hospital capacity and resources if there is an outbreak in the community.

China closes school as H1N1 flu cases mount

Posted: 22 June 2009

BEIJING: A school in south China has been closed after 30 students fell ill with H1N1 flu, as the number of cases nationwide increased four-fold in the past two weeks, health authorities said.

The children, all from a primary school in Guangdong province's Dongguan city, fell ill with A(H1N1) flu at the end of last week, the provincial health department said in a statement posted on its website late Sunday.

Authorities closed Shipai Central Primary School for a week, and have quarantined those in close contact with the patients.

The health department said the students' symptoms were mild, but warned the risk of a partial epidemic was looming in the province. Guangdong neighbours Hong Kong, where many schools have been closed following H1N1 flu outbreaks.

"At present, Guangdong is in a situation where both imported and domestic cases, as well as the H1N1 flu and seasonal flu, co-exist," the statement said.

"According to the pattern of the spread of the flu, there is a growing risk of disease outbreaks in more areas of the province, and even of a partial epidemic."

The province has so far reported 111 cases - the largest number in mainland China, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

A total of 414 people have fallen ill with A(H1N1) flu in China, of which nearly 200 have already recovered, the country's health ministry said on its website late Sunday.

This is more than a four-fold increase from two weeks ago, when the country recorded its 100th case. No deaths have been reported.

According to the latest World Health Organisation figures, nearly 44,300 cases of the H1N1 flu have been reported worldwide, with 180 fatalities.
