China initiates epidemiological investigation of influenza A (H1N1)

China will launch next year an epidemiological investigation in the country on influenza A (H1N1) in an attempt to provide more scientific data to help take over prevention and control.

According to a circular issued on Wednesday by the Ministry of Health, the research will focus on 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions including Beijing, Shandong and Henan. A total of 54,000 people per province--4500 will be surveyed.

The investigation was carried out in three periods: the next January, March and April and August to September.

Ministry experts say that today a large number of patients have only mild symptoms of flu and there are many potential cases of infection, which means that the official number of flu cases no longer reflects the current epidemic situation in the country.

Experts say the country urgently need to understand the level of infection in different age groups in different periods of time to create more prevention and control plans.

Next year will launch a serological epidemiological research around the country, 400 people sampled in each of the 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, as well as Corporations Xinjiang Production and Construction.

The ministry also urged the related organizations to strengthen prevention and control of disease by the New Year festival, the date on which migrant workers and students-the most vulnerable groups tend to travel home in large numbers .

It also requested education departments to strengthen education related to HIV / AIDS prevention among students before the holidays and take care of all who stay in school.

The ministry also urged government organizations at all levels to ensure stocks of medicine and medical equipment, and to report any flu-related emergency as soon as possible.

The ministry's statistics show that from 21 to 27 December, reported a total of 4,448 new cases of influenza throughout the country. (Xinhua)
