Doctors warn: These mistakes must be avoided.
One night, the pediatric emergency room saw 79 children with respiratory infections! With the start of the school season, many children are experiencing coughs, runny noses, and fevers. Qian Miao, deputy chief physician of pediatrics at Nanjing Maternal and Child Health Hospital, explained that the fluctuating temperatures during the summer-to-autumn transition, coupled with children's still-developing immune systems and the high density of people on school grounds, increase the risk of cross-infection, leading to a significant increase in pediatric outpatient visits. Parents often panic when their children suddenly become unwell. Given the large number of patients at hospitals, prioritizing whether medical attention is necessary and how to minimize the time spent at the hospital is the safest approach.
Qian Miao explained that changes in a child's mental state are more telling than a temperature reading. If a child goes from being active to lethargic, sleepy, difficult to wake, and unwilling to interact, regardless of their temperature, they should be taken to the doctor immediately. If a child is in good spirits, eating and playing normally, and only has a low-grade fever and mild cough, they can be observed at home first, with plenty of fluids and rest. Crowding at hospitals with mild cases can actually increase the risk of cross-infection.
