China - Hong Kong CHP reports some new H7N9 avian flu cases without details, some are previously known - April 21, 2017

I generally do not post this weekly summary report because it gives very little detail and the time frame overlaps with the very excellent Avian Influenza Weekly Report that is published with case details. The next avian influenza report is due April 25 and should give some insight to the below data. We have listed some of the below cases and some are new. Also due out next week is the very, VERY excellent periodic FAO H7N9 report.

I can't do anything with the below information. Some of it appears contradictory to local city/provincial reports.




CHP notified of human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Mainland

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (April 21) received notification from the National Health and Family Planning Commission that 27 additional human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9), including seven deaths, were recorded from April 14 to 20, and strongly urged the public to maintain strict personal, food and environmental hygiene both locally and during travel.

The 16 male and 11 female patients, aged from 34 to 79, had onset from March 22 to April 18, of whom seven were from Beijing, five from Hunan, three each from Hebei and Sichuan, two each from Shandong and Zhejiang, and one each from Anhui, Gansu, Guangxi, Jiangxi and Liaoning. Among them, 21 were known to have exposure to poultry, poultry markets or mobile stalls.

In the above report there is a case from Jiangxi province. According to Jiangxi province health and planning commission the last case was on or about March 20 - 24:

The province's H7N9 epidemic tends to be stable, showing a lower level of occurrence. March 18, 20 to 24, the province reported H7N9 new cases in 1 case, 1 case of death.

Today's statement from the Jiangxi health and planning commission indicates there have been no new cases since the above case at about March 18 - 24:

　　Jiangxi Province Health Committee reported that April 15, 2017 - April 21, the province without H7N9 new case report. Since March 24, the province has 29 consecutive days without a new case report.

It appears that the Jiangxi case mentioned in the China NHFPC report, via the Hong Kong CHP, in post 1 was first reported at the province level one month ago.

I have no idea if the time delay of one month between the provincial and national reporting is typical or not.
