"It really snowed in Hangzhou!" Yesterday, the coldest day of the year, snow fell in Hangzhou as expected. While social media was flooded with snowy scenes, the number of patients seeking treatment at the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Zhejiang Xinhua Hospital) surged.
"Among the patients seeking medical attention, the number of hospitalizations for COPD and asthma patients has increased by 30%, and the number of outpatients with upper respiratory tract infections has increased by at least 20%," said Chen Ye, director of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. A large proportion of these patients experienced acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease due to influenza virus or respiratory syncytial virus.
According to meteorological information, although this rain and snow will end, temperatures will continue to plummet. This morning and tomorrow morning, most areas will see lows of only -4°C to -1°C, with even lower lows in mountainous areas reaching -8°C to -4°C, accompanied by severe freezing conditions. However, temperatures this weekend will experience a rollercoaster ride, potentially hitting 20°C.
As the cold weather continues, the "battle to protect breathing" for COPD patients is entering a critical phase.
The "breathing crisis" below freezing point
Mr. Chen has suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for more than ten years. His lungs are like two "old and dilapidated bellows", and every breath is a struggle.
Starting in mid-January, a strong cold wave swept southward, and Mr. Chen (pseudonym) began to feel an unprecedented sense of suffocation. This sudden cold, combined with an upper respiratory tract infection, became the last straw that broke his back.
He coughed uncontrollably, phlegm stuck in his throat, and even with his mouth open, he felt like he couldn't breathe. It felt like a huge rock was pressing on his chest. Conventional home medications and care were no longer able to control his deteriorating condition, so his family rushed him to the hospital, eventually transferring him to the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Xinhua Hospital in the province for further treatment.
