Surging hand-foot-mouth disease in Beijing

Beijing saw an outbreak of hand-foot-mouth disease with more than 2,600 cases reported per week from May 26 to June 22, said the capital's disease prevention center on Sunday.

In the four consecutive weeks during the period, the number of weekly reported hand-foot-mouth cases increased from 2,645 to 3,013 in Beijing, said the Beijing Disease Prevention and Control Center...

Case of severe paediatric enterovirus infection under CHP investigation

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 11) investigating a case of severe paediatric enterovirus (EV) infection and urged the public to be vigilant against the disease.

The case involved a girl aged two with good past health. She presented with fever, vomiting and rash over her lower limbs since July 1. She was taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital on July 4 and was admitted on the same day. Her condition deteriorated after admission and she passed away on July 5.

Her throat swab and blood specimen tested positive for EV upon preliminary laboratory testing by Prince of Wales Hospital.

Initial enquiries by the CHP revealed that the patient lived in Shenzhen. Her home contacts remain asymptomatic. The CHP's investigation is continuing.

The case has been referred to the Coroner for follow-up...

EV71 case with meningitis complication investigated

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (July 11) investigating a case of Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection with meningitis complication involving a 15-year-old girl, and urges the public to be vigilant against the disease.

The girl, with good past health, presented with fever, headache and vomiting since June 24. She attended the Accident and Emergency Department of North District Hospital on June 27 and was transferred to the paediatric ward of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital on the same day.

Her clinical diagnosis was meningitis. She recovered and was discharged on July 7.

Her throat swab and rectal swab specimens tested positive for EV71 after analysis by the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch of the CHP.

Initial investigation revealed that she had no recent travel history. Her home contacts remain asymptomatic.

The investigation is continuing...
