Guangzhou bird flu epidemic under control of the central slaughtering system for chickens

2008-03-18 08:58:05 Xinkuaibao online

Guangzhou Liwan Jinhua new markets avian flu, a stone encroachment. On the 17th, the city over the farm produce markets, "a nationwide mobilization" of bird flu to rapidly launch a cleansing and disinfection work, more market simply stop selling live chickens.

In addition, the city is exploring central slaughtering system for chickens, pigs slaughtered follow, will live chickens transactions out of the market.

Central slaughtering chickens to minimize contact

Guangzhou City Animal Epidemic Prevention Authority director on the 17th Cong Peng revealed that the Government is exploring central slaughtering system for chickens, live chickens from the retail market transactions. This means that in future people will not come into contact with live chickens in markets, replaced by the people for the reunification of the abattoir slaughtering chickens in the markets can only buy good chicken has been slaughtered.

Chickens gradually withdraw from the retail market, and reduce the access of live chickens, will undoubtedly help poultry markets health management norms. 彭所长 Bangsuochang said, the public markets or supermarkets to buy chicken, to choose the management of regulated market. In addition, buying live chickens should be minimal Recently, we can consider buying more chickens processed chicken.

Guangzhou epidemic has been basically brought under control

"Avian flu virus rather special, in urban areas found that the avian flu can not engage in formalism, the handling of the epidemic should be tangible, but also to adapt." On the 17th, Guangzhou City Animal Epidemic Prevention Authority director Cong Peng said at the national information released confirmed ago, Guangzhou started on a plan to do the worst preparation. He said that the current avian flu epidemic in Guangzhou basically under control. Cong Peng, "16 in the afternoon, the state laboratory confirmed the outbreak of avian influenza, the same afternoon issued a news Indeed, we are in the country prior to release information on the 14th, the worst intend to do, then has been in accordance with outbreak of avian flu in the in-house work. "

Avian influenza increased risk of influenza coexistence

Guangzhou now is a period of high incidence of influenza and avian flu the past few days have appeared.
In response to this phenomenon, called Guangzhou Institute of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Director Zhong Nanshan on the 16th in an interview that the cold winter this year in Guangzhou relatively long period, the influenza viruses after a long incubation period, the weather is warming, the virus entered the active phase , the coexistence of two dangerous virus has increased. Zhong Nanshan said that the previous cases of influenza have caused a fatal case of pneumonia, but the bird flu virus more virulent, there has been variation occurred from bird to human transmission, "This is now the focus of surveillance of influenza virus."

No high-risk groups outbreak infected

CDC deputy director of Guangzhou City on the 17th Yangzhicong said in an interview at CDC have sent staff at the outbreak of high-risk groups, a symptom found immediately rushed to the hospital for an examination.

Up to the present, all poultry contact, and bought culled chickens tested negative for the public, not people infected with the avian flu.

Yangzhulin reminded, avian flu and influenza disease different, preventive measures are also different. The prevention of avian flu is to cut off the main channel contact with poultry, not mutually transmitted between people: the best people do not have contact with live poultry, poultry should bring gloves and masks, if not carefully wash their hands after contact disinfection should be timely, Let virus invasion of human opportunities.

Yangzhulin, low immunity, children, parents in particular should not allow contact with poultry and less contact with the birds to the zoo.

China Lifts Bird Flu Quarantine in Guizhou Province

Posted on: Tuesday, 18 March 2008, 12:00 CDT
China has lifted a bird flu quarantine in southwestern province of Guizhou on Tuesday after no new cases were reported for 21 days.
No new outbreaks of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus strain were found 21 days after at least 240,000 poultry have been slaughtered since it broke out on Feb. 17 in Zheng'an County, Zunyi City in Guizhou, the Ministry of Agriculture said on Tuesday.
The ministry has urged local authorities to beef up supervision and prevention measures and raise people's awareness to prevent new outbreaks. Bird flu, or Avian influenza, is a contagious disease of animal origin caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs. It can kill humans.
China saw five bird flu outbreaks in poultry this year. Others included one in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, two in the southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region and one in the southern Guangdong province.
On Feb. 25, a 44-year-old woman surnamed Zhang in Haifeng County in Guangdong, was killed by the H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus. This raised the total number of human bird flu cases recorded in China to 29, of which 19 have been fatal, according to the World Health Organization.
The ministry earlier this month warned that the country faced a more "complicated" epidemic control situation this year with a rise in the number of reported cases.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus has swept west across the globe and caused serious debates on the roles of migratory birds in virus circulation since the first large-scale outbreak in migratory birds of Lake Qinghai, 2005.

In May 2006, another outbreak struck Lake Qinghai and six novel strains were isolated.

To elucidate these QH06 viruses, the six isolates were subjected to whole-genome sequencing.

Phylogenetic analyses show that QH06 viruses are derived from the lineages of Lake Qinghai, 2005.

Five of the six novel isolates are adjacent to the strain A/Cygnus olor/Croatia/1/05, and the last one is related to the strain A/duck/Novosibirsk/ 02/05, an isolate of the flyway.

Antigenic analyses suggest that QH06 and QH05 viruses are similar to each other.

These findings implicate that QH06 viruses of Lake Qinghai may travel back via migratory birds, though not ruling out the possibility of local circulation of viruses of Lake Qinghai.

Wholesale poultry markets start disinfection

2008-03-20
WHOLESALERS in Shenzhen's poultry markets started to disinfect their stalls from yesterday, days after reports of a bird flu outbreak in Guangzhou.

The wholesalers have been ordered to close their businesses in turns for disinfection and cleaning from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day, said quarantine officials who will be staying at the wholesale markets round the clock to monitor the situation. The officials will also check the area every two hours, said Zhuo Liang, vice chief of Nanshan Farm Produce Management Co.

So far there has been no sign of a bird flu outbreak in Shenzhen, and residents are free to eat chicken and other birds, Luo Qiuhui, head of the Shenzhen Animal Health Inspection Institute, said.

The Nanshan Wholesale Poultry Market, the only wholesale poultry market inside the special economic zone, has been disinfecting its stalls daily since opening one and a half years ago, according to Zhuo.

"All the wholesalers in the market have health certificates and have received flu vaccine injection. Poultry will only be allowed in after going through stringent checks and inspection," Zhuo said.

"The outbreak in Guangzhou has little impact on Shenzhen. We used to have only a small number of poultry coming from Guangzhou and Foshan areas and have stopped buying from these areas right after the outbreak," he added.

The bird flu outbreak in Guangzhou has let to a rise in poultry prices in Shenzhen, but Wang Xianghua, chief of Songgang wholesale poultry market, said he expected the prices to return to normal soon.

Last week's outbreak in Guangzhou killed 114 poultry and resulted in the slaughter of 518 more birds. It has been contained, however, the Ministry of Agriculture said.

China has reported three bird flu deaths among humans this year, including that of a 44-year-old migrant worker last month in Guangdong Province. It has recorded 20 human deaths since the virus began ravaging Asian poultry stocks in late 2003.

China, which raises more poultry than any other country, has vowed to aggressively fight the virus that has killed at least 235 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. :tiphat:

95% of poultry farms are epidemic immune
Latest Updated at 2008-March-21 11:24:20

After the incidence of bird flu at Jinhua New Market in Liwan District, the Guangzhou Animal Epidemic Prevention and Supervision Institute continued to patrol and check the poultry marketplaces in Guangzhou on March 18. According to Director Peng Cong, the Guangzhou Animal Epidemic Prevention and Supervision Institute had recently inspected 4,576 poultry farms in Guangzhou. The result showed that over 95% of these poultry farms are immune. The inspection to 512 poultry marketplaces also indicated that there was no clinical abnormities in the animal products. Also, the epidemic prevention and supervision authority enhanced the check-up of the poultry antibodies and among the 22,674 samples randomly selected, 17,618 were eligible, with an eligible rate up to 77.7%, higher than the national standard of 70% and no positive cases were found among all the random samples in Guangzhou.

The agricultural authority also intensified its prevention inspection over the 109 stores of the 28 markets of agricultural products within a 3-kilometer-semidiameter centered at the epidemic spot. The agricultural authority issued two copies of Remedy Advice during its inspection.

However, Peng Cong also remarked that there are still some hidden trouble spots in epidemic prevention and controls and that these need to be improved. :tiphat:

Shakeup in bird flu fight

Damon Pang

Wednesday, April 02, 2008

Hong Kong has adopted a zonal approach to outbreaks of avian flu in Guangdong to avoid banning live poultry from across the province, according to sources.

Previously, a province-wide ban was applied when a case of bird flu was recorded in Guangdong.

Hong Kong is supplied by more than 90 registered chicken farms in Guangdong and over a dozen chilled and frozen poultry processing plants.

The province-wide ban will only be valid for 21 days if a registered farm is infected by bird flu, the sources said yesterday.

Under the new approach, poultry or poultry products from a restricted area within a three-kilometer radius of the point of infection will be banned for 90 days. Poultry from a control area between three and 13 kilometers from the infected area will be banned for 21 days.

If a human case of bird flu is found in the province, live poultry from within a 13km radius of the possible point of infection will also be banned for three weeks.

If bird flu is detected in only one nonregistered farm a farm that does not supply poultry to Hong Kong the three- month and three-week bans in the restricted and control areas will apply.

For more than one nonregistered farm being infected, the three-month and three-week bans in the restricted and control areas will apply while the authorities may consider suspending entry of poultry from the entire province.

The zonal approach is being implemented, sources said, in light of guidelines issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 2006, and by the World Organization for Animal Health last year.

The approach was used twice this year following two bird flu outbreaks, one in Liwan, Guangzhou, last month and another in Shanwei in February.

Sources said the new measures were not adopted because of pressure from the poultry industry or elsewhere.

Mainland authorities support the move, sources said, and local experts and academics, rather than those in the trade, had been consulted.

Lawmakers welcomed the new move. Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong lawmaker Wong Yung-kan, who represents the agriculture and fisheries sector, said the move can stabilize poultry supplies to Hong Kong.

Shakeup in bird flu fight

Medical-sector lawmaker Kwok Ka-ki said the measure is sufficient to ensure public health as it complies with FAO guidelines.

China bans poultry from Turkey to prevent spread of bird flu
www.chinaview.cn 2008-04-03 00:11:37

BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- China has banned imports of poultry and related products from Turkey to prevent the spread of bird flu, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said on Wednesday.

On March 18, Turkey reported an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 virus to the World Organization for Animal Health, according to a statement from the MOA and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

All poultry products that left Turkey after the outbreak will be returned or destroyed, said the statement.

Turkish authorities reportedly culled about 1,000 chickens after detecting bird flu at a village in the northwestern province of Edirne.
