A couple things come to mind here. There first is whether the cases are confirmed H1N1 or merely suspected. It seems the deceased woman was elderly, and this could just be seasonal flu.

What scares me a little about this outbreak is the location. While I am relieved slightly to see there is some history of travel to the US, there are a lot more scary things that have come out of Guangdong than H1N1.

I would felt a little more at ease if these cases were confirmed as something, even H1N1 to rule out H5N1 or SARS.

OK. I feel a little better. It appears that at least one case in this cluster is confirmed H1N1, and on closer reading, the mother's death might not have had anything to do with any illness.

It might have just been a "surprise" by nautral causes.

The case involved a 62-year-old ethnic Chinese man of US nationality, who arrived in Hong Kong on May 17 on Cathay Pacific flight CX 879 from San Francisco.

He took a bus to Taishan, Jiangmen in Guangdong Province, on May 18.

He developed a fever on May 20 and saw a doctor on May 22. The next day, he went to the People's Hospital of Taishan city, and was tested positive for A(H1N1) flu by the municipal Center of Disease Control and Prevention.

On Tuesday, the Guangdong provincial and Guangzhou municipal centers of Disease Control and Prevention also tested the case A(H1N1) positive.

The provincial health authorities diagnosed the case as a suspected A(H1N1) flu case on Tuesday night.

As of Tuesday, the mainland had 12 confirmed A(H1N1) flu cases.

It is correct that we do not know what the mother died from. Hence the word "possible". It is interesting that 3 villages have been quarantined (blocked) for only 1 confirmed H1N1 case.

No, the mother died on 5/17, and he arrived the next day. She couldn't have died of H1N1. She died before he arrived.

That's one heckuva surprise for someone flying to China to see his mother.

And if he was 62, she was likely over 80, so natural causes is a good guess.

But is the mention of 26 patients in the first article a date (5/26), or are there 26 other possible cases?

What's your reading on the 26 patients in your article though? Do you think others are ill, or is 5/26 a date involved?

I just compared the two articles, and 5/26 happens to be the date the case was confirmed. I think there is only the one case so far, and an over-reaction like blocking villages is understandable given the history Guangodng has had with emerging respiratory diseases.

It seem like the article you posted from sina.com (#11) is the same as the original article, minus the translation error(s). That article seems consistent with the other articles on this case. The case on the 17th is a DIFFERENT imported case. The two articles seem consistent.

The clean translation in #11 also indicates that his mother's death was the reason for his trip, not just an unpleasant surprise, which is certainly more believeable than what I had originally assumed.

The articles do differ on the number of contacts under observation, but do any of the articles mention any illness in any contact? My reading of the articles doesn't find any.

Second A/H1N1 flu case in Guangdong confirmed

Guangdong Province Wednesday reported its second influenza A/H1N1 case, bringing to 13 the total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland.

The case involved a 62-year-old ethnic Chinese man of U.S. nationality, who arrived in Hong Kong on May 17 on Cathay Pacific flight CX 879 from San Francisco. He took a bus to Taishan, Jiangmen in Guangdong Province, on May 18.

He developed a fever on May 20 and saw a doctor on May 22. The next day, he went to the People's Hospital of Taishan city, and was tested positive for A/H1N1 flu by the municipal Center of Disease Control and Prevention.

On Tuesday, the Guangdong provincial and Guangzhou municipal centers of Disease Control and Prevention also tested the case A/H1N1 positive.:tiphat:

It seem like the article you posted from sina.com (#11) is the same as the original article, minus the translation error(s). That article seems consistent with the other articles on this case. The case on the 17th is a DIFFERENT imported case. The two articles seem consistent.

The clean translation in #11 also indicates that his mother's death was the reason for his trip, not just an unpleasant surprise, which is certainly more believeable than what I had originally assumed.

The articles do differ on the number of contacts under observation, but do any of the articles mention any illness in any contact? My reading of the articles doesn't find any.

My summary of this incident so far is that Mr. Huang, who is 62 years old flew from the US to China shortly after the May 17 death (of natural causes, likely) of his elderly mother. He has tested positive for H1N1 on the 26th, even though he is not aware of any contact with any patient in the US. He is being treated in isolation, and about 20-30 contacts of his have been quarantined, including a few HCW. Three villages have been blocked off until around June first.

But no one else is showing symptoms (and more importantly, there is nothing in this incident to suggest any H5N1, SARS, or other things that would be scarier than H1N1).

Does anyone disagree with this summary or have something important to add?
