8 tourists killed, death toll crosses 100 in China rains

Eight tourists were killed and five others injured today when an upstream dam collapse triggered a flood in south China, while over 100 people died in floods and landslides battering the country for past few days.

An upstream dam collapsed in Paradise Valley in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region triggering the flood, local officials said.

Rescuers have recovered eight bodies so far. The injured have been sent to a hospital in neighbouring Mengshan County.

Hundreds of thousands of people in southeast China have been evacuated after a powerful typhoon barreled into the region, packing strong winds and heavy rain.

Typhoon Soulik made landfall in China's Fujian province Saturday afternoon after sweeping across Taiwan.

The typhoon comes as China is already battling torrential rainfall across large parts of the country, especially in Sichuan province. Some 200 people have been killed in floods, the worst in some areas of Sichuan in 50 years.

China evacuates 500,000 as storm hits

Eastern China yesterday braced for torrential downpours from Typhoon Soulik which forced the evacuation of half a million people.
Soulik lashed China?s Fujian Province with winds of 118kph when it made landfall, but had weakened to a tropical depression as it moved inland, the China Meteorological Administration said.
More than half a million people were evacuated from Fujian and Zhejiang provinces as the typhoon approached, with 5,500 soldiers deployed to carry out relief work if needed.

China says flooding has killed 337 this year

BEIJING ? Flooding in China this year has left at least 337 people dead and 213 missing, due mainly to unusually wet summer weather, the government said Sunday.

Floods this year have struck across 30 provinces and municipalities and affected more than 47 million people, according to the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

The headquarters said landslides have accounted for 202, or about 60 percent, of the confirmed deaths.

Death toll continues to rise following days of heavy rains in China, as floods further south in the Philippines recede

Heavy rains resulting from a typhoon in southern China triggered landslides and killed at least 15 people, raising the number of dead or missing from recent flooding in the country to more than 200.

Nine people were reported killed in Hunan province and six in Guangxi, where vehicles were covered in mud and rocks along a mountain highway, local flood control offices said.

The deaths come after three people died Sunday in a landslide near the Guangxi city of Wuzhou.
