Epidemic death toll hits 34; 27,500 cases reported
By Shan Juan (China Daily)
Updated: 2008-05-10 07:38

The number of people killed in cases related to hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) rose to 34 on Friday, with the number of reported cases reaching almost 27,500.

Two of the latest victims were from Anhui, the province hardest hit by the outbreak, which has now reported 22 child fatalities.

On Friday, the State Council held a meeting to discuss methods to prevent and control the disease during the summer, which experts have said will be the time when the virus that causes HFMD will be at its most virulent.

All of the 34 children killed by the disease tested positive for the intestinal virus EV 71, the Xinhua News Agency reported.

EV71 was first identified as a major cause of HFMD associated with neurological damage in the United States in 1969.

Ran Xiangui, deputy director of Fuyang No 2 Hospital - the designated treatment facility for the Anhui city - said: "We have seen that the main cause of death is breathing failure induced by neurological damage."

The most common symptoms of HFMD are mild rashes on the hands and feet, and in the mouth, and fever. In most cases, people recover in four to seven days.

Yang Weizhong, deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Prevention and Control, said research and development of a vaccine for the disease was under way.

"There are no major technical barriers to developing the vaccine," he said, adding that it should be available soon.

However, as there is currently no cure for severe EV-71 infections, doctors have urged the public to maintain high levels of hygiene as a precautionary measure.

Doctors told to stop HFMD vaccine rumors
By Staff Reporters 2008-5-12

THE Disease Control and Prevention Center in Anhui Province has issued an emergency notice, requiring an immediate stop to doctors recommending a vaccine for hand, foot and mouth disease.

The center also urged all disease control departments in the eastern province to properly guide residents in HFMD prevention. Anhui has reported 9,304 HFMD cases including 24 deaths.

After the epidemic of HFMD in the worst-hit Fuyang City was revealed, rumors spread throughout Anhui that an immune serum or pneumonia vaccine could prevent HFMD.

Medical experts said the HFMD epidemic in Anhui was mostly caused by enterovirus 71, or EV71, for which there is no vaccine.

The Anhui disease control center has asked medical facilities to educate people in accordance with Ministry of Health guidelines and immediately stop recommending an immune serum to prevent residents from being cheated by swindlers. Experts said HFMD is a preventable and controllable disease and there is no need for panic.

The outbreak in Fuyang, where 22 deaths from the illness was recorded, is under control, the ministry said yesterday. No fatalities were reported from May 2 to Saturday, a ministry official said.

Zhong Nanshan, a well-known Chinese respiratory diseases expert, said at the weekend that HFMD was a common infectious disease and there had been no abnormal increase in the incidence of the disease or its mortality rate this year in China compared to previous years.

Since the ministry listed HFMD as a notifiable disease on May 2, more cases were reported to health authorities. More people have also gone to hospital for checkups after media coverage of HFMD intensified, so statistics from hospitals also increased. The two factors could have misleadingly suggested an increase of HFMD in China, he explained.

China has reported more than 27,600 HFMD cases this year, including 34 fatalities.

Hainan Update

The "Nan Guo Du Shi Bao" newspaper (local Hainan news) reported today 486 cases of HFM disease in Hainan. This is an increase of 206 cases in the past two days (although I notice the overall figures for China have not been updated in past couple days -- China Daily and Xinhua still reporting "around" 27,500).

The Nan Guo newspaper has stopped reported number of cases in individual cities in Hainan, which they were doing up through Friday.

The newspaper is also recommending drinking Chrysanthemum tea to "prevent" EV71.

HFMD kills five more Chinese children, death toll hits 39

May 12, 2008, 12:18 GMT

Beijing - The death toll from a virally transmitted hand- foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in China rose to 39 Monday as the government reported the deaths of five more children in three provinces.

But the health ministry said the epidemic had been brought under control and that more children were being discharged from hospitals, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Health authorities in the eastern province of Anhui said a girl from Lixin county had died in nearby Fuyang city of HFMD caused by the enterovirus EV71.

Three more deaths were reported in the southern province of Guangdong and one in the nearby island province of Hainan, the agency said.

China has recorded about 27,500 HFMD infections this year.

Fuyang, where more than 5,000 cases of HFMD and at least 23 deaths were reported, and other parts of Anhui province are the worst- affected areas.

The World Health Organization last week said it was satisfied with China's efforts to curb the spread of infections.

HFMD is a common childhood disease that causes symptoms including ulcers and blisters in the mouth, rashes on the hands and feet and fever.

It is spread mainly by EV71, which is from the same family as the polio virus, but it can also be transmitted by several other viruses.

China recorded more than 80,000 HFMD cases and 17 deaths in 2007, the health ministry said.

HFMD mainly affects infants and young children and is life- threatening in a small number of cases owing to complications such as lung haemorrhage and meningitis.

Five more Chinese children die from virus -Xinhua

BEIJING, May 12 (Reuters) - A strain of hand, foot and mouth disease has killed five more children in China, bringing the death toll in recent weeks to 39, state media said on Monday.

But the official Xinhua news agency cited health officials as saying that the epidemic was being brought under control, with more children being discharged from hospital.

A girl in eastern Anhui province died of the disease on Thursday, while one child died in southern Hainan province and three died in southern Guangdong.

Close to 27,500 cases of the disease had been reported in China as of last Friday, Xinhua said earlier. It said on Monday that new cases in some of the hardest-hit places, including Fuyang in eastern Anhui province, were now declining.

"The majority of patients who were in critical condition have recovered," Xinhua quoted a Health Ministry official as saying of the situation in Fuyang.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common childhood illness, but in the current outbreak it has been linked with enterovirus 71 (EV71), which can cause a severe form of the disease characterised by high fever, paralysis and meningitis.

There is no vaccine for the disease and normally patients recover within a week to 10 days. But cases involving EV71 usually lead to more severe symptoms.

Xinhua added that Premier Wen Jiabao had recently visited a young patient suffering from the disease in a hospital in central Henan province, as well as a local kindergarten. "Wash your hands before eating a meal and after using the toilet," Xinhua quoted Wen as telling the children. (Reporting by Jason Subler and Lucy Hornby; Editing by Nick Macfie)

Death toll up but epidemic stalls
2008-5-13

FIVE more children have died of the hand-foot-mouth disease, taking the national toll to 39, but the epidemic is said to have been brought under control with more children being discharged from hospitals, officials said,

Health authorities in eastern China's Anhui Province on Saturday confirmed that a girl, surnamed Huang from Lixin County of Anhui, had died of HFMD caused by Enterovirus 71.

Huang was reportedly admitted to a local hospital last Wednesday. Her condition quickly worsened, and she was transferred to Fuyang City Hospital later that day but died on Thursday.

Another death was reported in Hainan Province and three others in Guangdong. No further details about these four cases are available.

Re: Hainan Update

. . . The newspaper is also recommending drinking Chrysanthemum tea to "prevent" EV71.

Chrysanthemum tea is a flower-based tisane made from chrysanthemum flowers of the species Chrysanthemum morifolium or Chrysanthemum indicum, which are most popular in East Asia. . . .

Chrysanthemum tea has many purported medicinal uses, including an aid in recovery from influenza and as a "cooling" herb. According to traditional Chinese medicine the tisane can aid in the prevention of sore throat and promote the reduction of fever. In Korea, it is known well for its medicinal use for making people more alert and is often used to waken themselves. In western herbal medicine, Chrysanthemum tea is drunk and used as a compress to treat circulatory disorders such as varicose veins and atherosclerosis.

In traditional Chinese medicine, chrysanthemum tea is also used to treat the eyes, and is said to clear the liver and the eyes. The liver is associated with the eyes and the liver is associated with anger, stress, and related emotions. It is believed to be effective in treating eye pain associated with stress or yin/fluid deficiency. It is also used to treat blurring, spots in front of the eyes, diminished vision, and dizziness.

[ECDC UPDATE] Outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease in Asia
Update 13 May

A large outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is continuing in China.

The latest information reports around 25,000 cases with at least 34 fatalities, from nearly 20 Chinese provinces, of which Anhui is the most hit.

The outbreak in the city of Fuyang, which is the most affected and localized in Anhui province, is reported to be declining.

As expected with these outbreaks, infants and young children are most affected.

Nearly all deaths were related to enterovirus 71 infections (See fact sheet).

However, it is not known in how far other enterovirus(es), causing similar clinical symptoms, co-circulate in the current outbreak in China.

In 2007, China reported 80,000 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, with 17 deaths.

Severe HFMD strain found in 65 local cases

SHANGHAI had detected Enterovirus 71, or EV71, in 65 patients suffering hand-foot-and-mouth disease as of midnight Sunday, the city's disease control authority reported yesterday.

Twelve HFMD cases were found to be caused by Cox Asckievirus A16, another intestinal virus that leads to HFMD, the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said based on examination of 315 HFMD cases.

None of the patients had severe symptoms, said the Shanghai Health Bureau.

The bureau suggested kindergartens suspend classes or close the entire facility for two to three weeks if one child became severely sick or more than two cases were reported in a class within one week.

The bureau said preschoolers were the main sufferers of HFMD, so the temporary closure policy did not apply to primary and middle schools.

The city has reported 3,665 HFMD cases so far this year without any deaths or critically ill patients.

Of the reported cases in the city, most victims have been children between one and six years old and the number of patients in the city outskirts has been higher than those in downtown areas.

The incidence of the disease in migrant children is higher than in local children.

Four "small scale" hand-foot-mouth disease outbreaks were detected in local kindergartens last week. Each affected 10 to 15 children. So far, the outbreaks have been controlled, the bureau added.

Medical experts said the recent increase of HFMD cases was in line with the rest of the nation.

The bureau said the high incidence rate had occurred because the disease usually peaks in late Spring and early Summer, medical staff had an increased awareness of HFMD, there had been tightened case reporting and more residents had taken sick children to hospital.

Local authorities said the peak season for HFMD was between June and July and estimated that the HFMD situation may increase.

The health bureau said it would closely monitor the disease.

(Taiwan) CDC warns against travel to HFMD areas in China

STAFF WRITER, WITH CNA
Wednesday, May 14, 2008, Page 2

With the hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) outbreak reaching alarming levels in China, Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advised parents yesterday against traveling with their children to affected areas in China.

f it is not necessary, we recommend that parents refrain from visiting areas affected by the epidemic especially Guangdong Province with young children. If they must, they should be extremely cautious, CDC Deputy Director Chou Chih-hau (典瘚) said.

In Guangdong Province alone, Chou said, the number of cases had already reached about 14,800, with seven reported deaths.

In China, a total of 25,000 infections have been reported, with at least 39 deaths, he said.

The epidemic is most serious in Guangdong, Anhui and Zhejiang provinces.

In Taiwan, 19 new cases of HFMD were recorded last week, bringing the total of confirmed serious cases to 83 this year, with two deaths, Chou said.

Five more viral deaths confirmed in China; epidemic said to wane

BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) --

Five more Chinese children have died of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), officials said, taking the national toll to 39, but the epidemic is said to have been brought under control with more children being discharged from hospitals.

Health authorities in east China's Anhui Province on Saturday confirmed that a girl, surnamed Huang from Lixin County of Anhui, had died of HFMD caused by the enterovirus 71 (EV71).

Huang was reportedly admitted to a local hospital last Wednesday. Her condition quickly worsened, and she was transferred to Fuyang City Hospital later that day but died early Thursday.

Another death was reported in Hainan and three others in Guangdong. No further details about these four cases are available.

According to the Guidelines Regarding Prevention and Control of HFMD published on the Ministry of Health website, HFMD can be caused by a host of intestinal viruses, but EV71 and the Coxsackievirus (Cox A16) were the most common.

HFMD usually starts with a slight fever followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet.

Those sickened by EV71 often show serious symptoms. It can also lead to meningitis, encephalitis, pulmonary edema and paralysis in some children. There is no vaccine.

HFMD has sickened more than 24,934 children on the Chinese mainland, of whom 39 have died in six provinces: Anhui, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hunan and Zhejiang.

The Guangdong Health Department on Monday confirmed 14,793 cases of childhood infections province-wide so far, including seven deaths.

Reported infections in Guangdong peaked on May 8, with 2,226 new cases on that day. Since then, the incidence began to decline, and there were 1,604 cases on Sunday, Huang Fei, deputy chief of the Guangdong Health Department, said at a news briefing on Monday.

In Fuyang, the worst-hit city in east China's Anhui Province, the HFMD epidemic is under control, China's Health Ministry said on Sunday. No fatalities were reported from May 2-10 in Fuyang, said an official surnamed Yang with the Ministry of Health.

The city reported the country's initial HFMD outbreak and 22 deaths caused by the disease as of May 10.

"The incidence of HFMD in Fuyang is on the decline. The majority of patients who were in critical condition have recovered," he said.

The ministry said on Thursday that patients discharged in Fuyang had outnumbered those admitted to hospitals for the first time. As of that day, 4,927 infected children in Anhui had been discharged.

Grieving dad told to pay up
By Liang Qiwen (China Daily)
Updated: 2008-05-14 07:24

GUANGZHOU: After managing to raise 1,700 yuan to pay for the funeral of his 4-year-old daughter, Chen Weiming is now facing a new challenge: to find 5,000 yuan for the treatment of his two surviving daughters, one aged 7 years, the other 18 months.

Administrators at the Shenzhen Children's Hospital, where his daughters are patients, are refusing to treat them until he pays 5,000 yuan ($715), Chen said.

All three of the 31-year-old migrant worker's girls contracted hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD).

"How can I find that amount of money?" Chen, who lives in the Longgang district of Shenzhen, Guangdong province, said.

"I can't borrow any more from my friends and relatives. After all, they are not rich either."

Like thousands of other migrant workers, Chen is not covered by the government's health insurance scheme.

He is now imploring the hospital to save his daughters, with the promise he will pay what he owes as soon as he can.

"I have lost one daughter, I don't want to lose another," Chen said.

Four-year-old Chen Jiaqi was taken to the Shenzhen Children's Hospital on Saturday, suffering from a fever and a rash.

Her condition soon worsened and she died the next day.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, 39 children have now died from the disease nationwide. Little Chen was the first fatality for Shenzhen.

"If Jiaqi was alive, we could spend the rest of our lives peacefully and happily, even though we are poor," Chen Weiming said.

Chen and his family live in abject poverty. When working he earns about 1,000 yuan a month. They share a 450-yuan-a-month, 50-sq-m apartment, paid for by a benevolent relative.

Finding 7,700 yuan to pay for Jiaqi's hospital treatment, and later her funeral, was a Herculean task. He eventually raised the money with the help of friends and family.

Yet despite their poverty, Chen said his family life with his wife and three daughters was happy, until fate intervened.

The Chens moved to Longgang five years ago from undeveloped Wuhua county in northeast Guangdong.

"We left our hometown to find a better job and earn more money," Chen said.

But without a trade or a decent education, Chen's options are limited.

He has done a number of manual, unskilled jobs, but after a stint working on a factory production line, he is now unemployed.

His wife Xie is a full-time housewife.

HFMD is a common child illness caused mostly by the virus enterovirus 71. As well as the high number of fatalities, the illness has affected more than 27,500 people across China, Xinhua reported.

How tragic that China hasnt imposed a country-wide policy of waiving hospital costs regarding treatment of this disease. I suspect this may be a reason the death rate has risen this year...i.e. parents keeping their kids at home because of financial reasons and trying to get the kids admitted to hospital only when their condition dangerously deteriorates. How can an epidemic be stopped if parents cannot afford healthcare for their children and are turned away at the door???

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), the intestinal viral disease rampant among children, has continued to spread in China, with the national death toll now standing at 42.

Beijing's health authority on Wednesday confirmed that two children had died of HFMD in the capital. They were the first HFMD deaths ever reported in Beijing.

Deng Xiaohong, spokeswoman of the Beijing Health Department, said that the two victims were from Chaoyang District and Hebei Province, a neighbor of Beijing.

The child from Chaoyang died on the way to a hospital on Sunday. The other child was transferred to Beijing for further medical treatment from Hebei after the illness worsened. It was not immediately known when the child was transferred or when that death occurred.

"Under the regulations of the Ministry of Health, the child from Hebei should not be included in Beijing's HFMD death toll," said Deng.

She declined to provide further details about the two children.

There were 3,606 HFMD infections in the national capital as of Monday.

Meanwhile, the Hubei Provincial Health Department has confirmed that a 21-month-old boy from Chibi City in Hubei had died of HFMD on Monday.

The boy, surnamed Xie, checked in at a local village clinic for a fever on May 10 and was soon transferred to a township hospital where he was diagnosed as a suspected HFMD case. He was moved to Pufang Hospital in Chibi City, which has been designated as the facility for treatment of HFMD patients, on Monday.

Xie died at 8 p.m. on Monday during surgery after showing symptoms including respiratory and circulatory failure. Lab work by the Hubei Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed the boy died of HFMD triggered by the enter virus 71,also known as EV71.

The Hubei Provincial Health Department said as of midnight on Tuesday, there were 3,176 cases of HFMD infection province-wide, including 1,494 children who were treated and discharged from hospitals, and one death.

China's HFMD toll rises to 43 as girl in Jiangxi succumbs
www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-16 15:17:55

NANCHANG, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A 22-month-old girl from Ganzhou, a city in east China's Jiangxi Province, died of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in a hospital on Thursday, health officials said.

Her death took the national toll from HFMD, an epidemic disease that mainly affects children, to 43.

The Jiangxi Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday confirmed that lab work showed the girl had been infected with enterovirus 71 (EV71).

The child was from a village in Wudang Township, Longnan County. It was not immediately known when she fell ill.

Cases of children died from the first release to the epidemic, has experienced a total of 28 days.

For a nearly 40 have been found in the virus, confirmed the need for four weeks time ?

Within 28 days of the epidemic and rumors Guoxie each other, the spread of Fuyang in Anhui. When the truth was open, more than 700 people have been infected, more than 10 children died. Since then, the number of daily infections are on the rise, at present, the EV71 virus infection intestinal children throughout the 16 provinces in China, the number nearly 20,000, 29 children have died of this disease.

History strikingly similar - will be the first reported outbreak of Fuyang doctors, is that four years ago opened "Datouwawa" incident of people, and this was considered a sign of "lies辟谣words," the press release of the officials, is "Formula" in the incident were disciplined, vice mayor of Fuyang City, Mrs Chang-ping.

This is the gastro-intestinal virus infection in Fuyang City of Anhui EV71 child's growth figures. From April 27, 2008 official epidemic, the number has been rising. As of May 4, the city has 22 children so young. The virus infected people, has also appeared in Hong Kong, including more than 10 provinces and regions.

From the first children's deaths in Fuyang released to the epidemic, which has experienced 28 days.

Reported or not reported ?

Jia Shuaishuai this less than two-year-old, cute boys, died March 28, 2008 evening.

17:30 the same day, when the People's Hospital of Fuyang City Jiaojie Ban Liu Xiaolin, director of pediatrics, Dr. Bai Ban told her: Branch, admitted the two "severe pneumonia" children. Liu Xiaolin not enough time to look at medical records, one of the boys Shuaishuai Jia called on the last days of a state. "He difficulty in breathing, Tuzhe pink bubble solution." At that time, the presence of a doctor recalled, "after inspection found that the child has left heart failure pulmonary edema. Cardiac monitor that his heart rate in the slow-down Have gradually stopped breathing?? "

Jia Shuaishuai is so far confirmed the first death due to EV71 virus to children.

One hour after the death the same way take away the other "children with severe pneumonia" - the two-year-old Fang Yu Qian. Liu Xiaolin told the nurses, ward the day before, a child who died, and the two men is very similar. But many doctors believe that that child's symptoms similar to pneumonia.

"General right of severe pneumonia to heart failure, and that three people were left heart failure pulmonary edema." Accept "the China News Weekly" interview, Liu Xiaolin said. Pneumonia in this section cure rate is 98 percent, but now, two and a half hours on the death of two children. The 26-year clinical experience of doctors, the next day will be abnormal situation was reported to the hospital.

In either to the hospital in particular, the Municipal Public Health Bureau reported on the issue, 57-year-old Liu Xiaolin have been hesitant. By the end of 2004, shocked the whole country in Fuyang inferior milk powder led to the "Taitouwawa", is home from the hospital reported to the pediatrician. "At that time, we take the initiative to find the media, the public can look forward to a education, warning. But in the end to overwhelming pressure from public opinion, we have become sinners." Liu Xiaolin said, "If the events of an accident, I will not Council gave the city Tianma Fan ?"

March 29, the same disease, the same within a few hours, two children died. Liu Xiaolin reported and no longer hesitate, Fuyang City Health Bureau was informed that the news.

"In the afternoon, we have organized experts in Fuyang City, samples were collected for identification." Accept "the China News Weekly" interview, Fuyang City Health Bureau said a deputy director. "We initially ruled out bird flu, SARS and other viruses, but not sure what exactly is this virus." March 30, but also a day of local experts testing, but the type of virus no conclusions. March 31, Fuyang City Health Bureau to the Anhui Provincial Health Office reported that several deaths.

That night, from the Anhui health department dispatched by the CDC experts arrived in Fuyang. "But that day did not appear similar cases, they returned." Sighed Liu Xiaolin said.

The experts left the province, on April 3 morning, 4-month-Zhang Manli was sent to Fuyang City People's Hospital. At that time, this girl has a shortness of breath and other symptoms of illness, a few hours later, she died.

A doctor said: Back in early March, Fuyang City on several hospitals have treated such "abnormal" children. Most of them were diagnosed with respiratory disease, with typical pneumonia symptoms but not fully consistent. It was not until half a month, were not pay attention to this unusual situation.

A press release: "This is not abnormal"

April 4, including Anhui Province, Ren Jun, director of the CDC experts Zaifu Fuyang survey, sampling tests. A parent stand out - the same evening, the father agreed to Zhang Manli, the remains will be donated to children's hospitals. Prior to that, "the deceased as a" concept, a number of parents have refused this request. But ultimately, the outcome of these experts is still "can not be confirmed." Then is the third instalment, in the fourth?? investigations continue.

Indeed, this is a more difficult task - the pathogen identified the need to rely on epidemiological investigation as a supplementary means, such investigations related to a large number of sampling, including the patient's physical condition, living environment, such as data collection. It can be said that samples collected from the pathogen that in the end, a dependence on a large number of sampling, analysis of the quantitative change to qualitative change from the process.

Experts course of the investigation, the influx of a large number of suspected patients of the People's Hospital of Fuyang City, the second People's Hospital. Most of the children repeatedly fever, herpes appear on their hands, buttocks and mouth. Children are mostly from rural areas, due to massive outflow of labour, grandparents take the children into staying in the hospital, "the main force."

This confusion has also increased the risk of infection. Accept the "China Newsweek" interview, the Chinese CDC in Beijing Ditan Hospital Chuan Ranke experts have said: Although the incidence adults often do not, but after close contact with patients, may have carried the virus. If such a hidden infection four flows, it will become one of the legs of the source of infection. This is also a village with the San Siqian Although people are often only one or a few of the reasons for patients.

Like viruses, the city also spread rumors. Some people say that this is the pig foot and mouth disease has spread to humans, it was said to be "human avian flu", said the direct "atypical pneumonia in children"! Allow more people to panic rumors, especially the closure of rural residents, so that more people dashed to the hospital. Confusion, the virus has spread faster speed - experts said, EV71 virus through close contact between the crowd spread, including respiratory droplets.

April 15, a "person of Fuyang in the recent respiratory infection symptoms in children with serious problems answering a reporter's question" (hereinafter referred to as "reporters"), at the same time, including "Fuyang Daily", Fuyang Local television stations, and other major media. Reports are questions and answers, not a signed, nor specify who is the respondent.

"A" on the people of Fuyang said: "Recently the city is treated several patients with respiratory tract infection and the patients have serious complications, a few have died. Spring is the high incidence of respiratory disease season this year, compared with previous years, the incidence Level has not increased, the situation is not unusual. "

"Infectious disease?" Of the doubt, this press release to explain: "The CDC experts epidemiological investigation, that these cases of disease transmission without mutual contact?? children and their families contacted by the crowd, So far not found in patients with similar symptoms, please tell the people not to worry. "And" is a normal phenomenon? "The question, the answer is" a normal year and compared to the same period, no special nature. "

But at the moment, a group of epidemiological, clinical, testing experts are in tension. Anhui Provincial Health Office to the Ministry of Health for help. "A reporter asked," broadcast on television, the Ministry of Health sent the first batch of experts went to Fuyang in the road. On the 16th morning, they reached the Fuyang.

Who signed the press release ?

A news release from six of the print paper, in its April 14 was sent to Fuyang mainly the media. The rise of the first page of the center signed a "? ? arrangements to publish - Mrs Chang-ping, 14 / 4" and later had a second person for the signing - Liu Ting-feng.

Before the two documents is an article entitled "interview with the media, CDC experts," the article. Is the article "A reporter asked" in the form of Fuyang Yizibucha to appear in the media. Signatory Mrs Chang-ping, that is, in 2004 for "Datouwawa" events are subject to administrative punishment demerits of the vice mayor of Fuyang City. In the spring of 2004, 189 cases in Fuyang City of Anhui baby food because of inferior milk powder, be suffering from a disease - "Big Head", which killed 12 people. At that time, "Information Times," an interview with Mrs long peacetime, Du said, "I do not want to take the blame and resign, I would like to continue to Ganxia Qu, I would like to find the weak links and work to correct shortcomings, is to strengthen."

After the outbreak public, the media questioned the "reporters" for "lie辟谣statement." Anhui Provincial Health Office of the Information Office Deputy Director FENG Li-said: "A reporter asked:" is not provided by the Fuyang city government, but the views of the Group. At that time, rumors are more social, health and the Office of Fuyang city government that it is necessary to publish some information. However, "" Fuyang Daily "reported not comprehensive - in fact, the Group's preliminary view is the diagnosis of respiratory tract infection and hand, foot and mouth disease."

"China Newsweek" reporter received the document, "Fuyang Daily" published an article compared determined, both exactly the same - "hand, foot and mouth disease" has never appeared.

Another media report: The second document signed - Vice Minister of Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department said Liu Ting-feng, April 14, the group preliminary findings as "rule out SARS, avian flu is a respiratory illness" , Also did not mention the hand, foot and mouth disease.

Experts are not informed of Fuyang City ? Fuyang officials or conceal the situation ? May 6, Fuyang City Health Bureau and the CDC is responsible for two people to the "China Newsweek" reporter: experts did not give the conclusions of hand, foot and mouth disease.

April 15 after the children leave have been sent back to the kindergarten, or in crowded public places. But there are also attentive parents found that: the next two days, some kindergartens and hospitals quietly put up a gate "on the hand, foot and mouth disease control measures," the leaflets.

16, Fuyang City Ying-chuen District kindergarten held a straight "emergency meeting" - the Park, named Wang Zhen Yu (Music), 3-year-old boy died two days ago. Until the child's grandmother to the claim, the teachers will know, he is due to "abnormal" premature end. Kindergarten children start to the day Liangti Wen, and check the upper hand-foot-and spray every day, "84 disinfectant solution." As long as children have a slight fever and would enable parents to reclaim. These measures, Park does not have any explanation, let parents Momingqimiao. On the morning of 18 scheduled in the park at the "Spring on how to prevent respiratory disease," the expert talks also "cancelled some reason."

After 28 days, EV71 surface

From April 4 was the first case of Fuyang anatomy of the remains of the deceased to April 16, 12 days have passed. At this point, Fuyang City Health Bureau to collect the samples have been sent to the hand of the Chinese CDC virus.

"On the 18th, we get the samples." Accept "the China News Weekly" interview, the CDC by a virus experts said, "This includes patients with the cerebrospinal fluid, blood and other fluid collection, but it did not identify the patients with matching Information such as the patient's name, gender, age, home address do not know what; epidemiological survey data do not know; clinical course it was not clear. "- Epidemiological investigation and clinical course of the pathogen is very important, but if patients Medical treatment before and after the record is not complete, and so after his death will re-back investigation to verify more difficult.

This has a background in Liuyang, highly professional training of experts, the cause of the need to be very stringent verification procedures, but in Fuyang - such a relatively backward cities in the Mainland, the doctor's professional nature and extent of many of his difference .

In many patients with information are missing cases, the virus which experts began the test. SARS、SARS, bird flu, pig-borne virus?? possible causes have been ruled out one by one. 19, Zhang Yong, the virus laboratory and other researchers have found some important clues. Fuyang City at the time but limited to only provide a specimen of a person, "This can not be used as the judgement of this event (based on)." China's disease control center, said Yang Wei, deputy director.

At this point, Fuyang, the local "abnormal" situation has become increasingly serious. The city health department collected more samples and sent to the Chinese CDC. April 23 afternoon, in five deaths among the samples, the experts detected in the gut of the EV71 virus nucleic acid, and the sequencing. In addition, from 21 only in the performance of only hands, mouth and feet of these sites appear rash of light patients, but also detected that the EV71 virus nucleic acid.

At 16:00 on April 23, Hsu Wen-wave laboratory, Zhang Yong identified the cause: intestinal virus is EV71. During the five days of the "sea election" has finally ended.

The same day, Fuyang clinical experts and local experts in epidemiology survey results also support the lab's test results. At 23:00 on the 23rd, the Ministry of Health expert group final, leading causes of infectious diseases is the EV71 virus, it caused by the hand, foot and mouth disease, resulting in 22 children died.

From the first cases of death in children to test results identified a total of 28 days.

"Last year, Linyi in Shandong also had hand, foot and mouth disease outbreak, the final total of nearly 40,000 cases. But in Shandong Province in the early CDC gave brought us enough information and a complete sample. And in submission before, they have basically Identify the disease because of hand, foot and mouth disease. "Virus by the Chinese CDC experts said. Finally, in 2007 in Shandong Province reported a total of hand, foot and mouth disease mortality rate was 0.043 percent. The April 23, 2008, the Anhui Provincial Health Office of the first public site in Fuyang epidemic data - As of the day, Fuyang found 610 children infected with EV71, mortality rate close to 3 percent.

"We do not have the power to release the epidemic"

Pathogen was identified by the news on the website of the Office of the Anhui Provincial Health "health information" for the "Comprehensive News" column, but this location is not visible. At 7:30 on May 6, the reporter from the site, opened it, the page record: 13 days to this news "was read 1379 times." At this time, the number of infections in Fuyang close to the 5000.

April 24, "Anhui Daily" reported the website of the Ministry of Health on this news. But the public often read "Xinan Evening News" and "Anhui Commercial Daily" "Jianghuai Morning News" and "Hefei Daily" newspaper, and most of the day of the Fuyang City media, did not mention this news. Faced with "Chi Bao-reporting false positives" Zhi Yisheng, Fuyang City, deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control Perfect Mount million repeatedly said: Fuyang no history of the Hand, Foot and mouth disease epidemic, no laboratory testing capacity, so that from the epidemic To determine the epidemic will take some time. "We did not receive the Ministry of Health or the Health Department's mandate, there is no power to release the epidemic." Fuyang Another local official said.

25, 26, in this two-day "blank media", another 179 sick children, one child died. Xinhua News Agency released on the 27th-draft, but the next day's Anhui province, most of the media again aphasia.

April 30, when the "China Newsweek" reporter rushed to Fuyang People's Hospital, in addition to out-patient floor, and first-aid center in the normal reception of other patients, the surgical floor, temporary entrance into the pediatric clinic, was surrounded by holding the parents of children The.

14:00 pm the same day, a middle-aged women in the out-patient floor, I do not know why the door crying, was quickly at the scene to maintain order in the pediatric clinic doctors advise taking; 20:30, have scheduled a team of four hours, 402 children with the grandmother , Fortunately, said: "There are nine on the turn us!" Other crowded in front of the children attending pre-parents, most of Jinzhou Meitou - on a car from the past, raised dust, direct flutter To three meters away from the road outside the pre-consultation on the Taiwan them. "It is not easy to find relations into the wards, but inside there is little disinfection measures. With the ground like the street, no one trailer," a children's parents named Li Juan, "said the doctor more and more people Some children just a mosquito bite, Learn from the parents. "

Provisional included in the ward by ward infection, the corridor, who have lived in the children with severe. A nurse and parents are lectures on hand-foot-mouth disease in the common sense: "Hand, Foot and mouth disease have a variety of ways, mainly through the gastrointestinal or respiratory infection, but also through contact with infected patients or hidden the stool, such as herpes infection of ?? "But the window of the ward were strewn on the lawn more than 10 reactor faeces, in the stool next to the bush on the drying of the more than 20 pieces of children clothes.

On this day, Fuyang intestinal virus infections surged to 2,477 cases, of which 20 patients died. Are still hospitalized and observed by 702 cases, of which 36 cases for critically ill patients.

More than 10 provinces found that the epidemic

Hand, Foot and mouth disease outbreaks in Anhui Fuyang, other parts of the country are epidemic. "China Newsweek" time, the national total, including Beijing, Hubei, Hong Kong, Macau, 16 provinces and regions have been reported.

"China Newsweek" reporter of nearly 10 cases of infection provinces CDC conducted an interview. Person in charge of the Beijing CDC: As of noon on May 5, Beijing reported a total of 1,482 cases of infected patients, but no one died. And Hubei, Jiangxi, Guangdong and other CDC official said, the exact number of infections and deaths to the official website published figures prevail.

Although the epidemic in the last week in the spread of the trend, but not many deaths, and no adult infections reported. "The epidemic will not threaten Beijing Olympic Games," WHO representative in China, or the Hanzhuo "China Newsweek" said that "China's health sector should be more open and timely communication to the public the information they should know."

At present, the provincial disease control center site, will be the Ministry of Health "issued by the Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Control and Prevention Guide (2008 edition)" in a prominent position. However, some provinces in health, disease control departments have remained wary of the press - as a reporter in the provinces contact the Centers for Disease Control, the other side "of the leadership." Henan Provincial Health Department on the official website of the latest information, stay in the April 30. 5月1日, May 1, "the People's Republic of China Government Information Disclosure Ordinance" has been officially implemented.

"EV71 disease epidemic hand, foot and the cause once they are identified, the disease itself is not terrible. Although there is no vaccine against it or vaccine or treatment, but it and polio, about 99 percent of people infected with the virus only, but No incidence. Incidence of which very few people, fewer people will also only occur fatal complications. "China by a CDC virus expert said," In general, as long as the early discovery, early treatment, EV71 From hand, foot and mouth disease in general can be quickly cured. Of course, the prerequisite for broad public, the right to publicity. "★

More about the EV71 epidemic in Fuyang

Quote...

Fuyang City of frontline doctors gradually have their own tendencies. Second People's Hospital of Fuyang City, vice president of RAN offer your contacts of cases, early death of the child and no apparent rash, but later a rash of individual children, "This people think of hand, foot and mouth disease." Hand, Foot and mouth disease is no stranger to the doctors, but the past, hand, foot and mouth disease death rate is very low, the current situation has never encountered before, not even the state statutory infectious disease and reported no mechanism. Fuyang City People's Hospital of the president in high school textbooks also found the investigation, "including gastro-intestinal virus polio virus, Coxsackie virus, and Egypt could be a new virus and enterovirus 71 serotypes of the virus, it is difficult to establish specific What kind.
