China's hand-foot-mouth infections rise to 22,240
www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-08 23:16:35

BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- China has reported 22,240 hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases so far this year by Thursday, resulting in 30 deaths, according to a Xinhua tally of local official figures.

The figure stood at 19,962 on Wednesday, Xinhua found.

Anhui Province in east China saw an increase of 738 HFMD cases on Tuesday, driving the total infections up to 7,283, with no new death report in the past week, according to the provincial health bureau.

A total of 3,780 patients have recovered and 2,218 others are still receiving treatment in hospitals there.

The worst-hit Fuyang City has registered 5,513 infections so far, including 1,340 being hospitalized. Doctors said ten of the patients are seriously sickened and three others in critical situation.

The municipal government has earmarked nearly 50 million yuan (7.1 million U.S. dollars) in medical cost reimbursement and disease prevention and control.

Meanwhile, a virus lab has been put into initial operation in the city recently for research of EV71, a virus that can cause a severe form of the disease, according to the municipal center for disease control and prevention.

"Under the instruction of the Ministry of Health, our main research includes separating and testing virus and diagnosing patients by molecular biology and serology", said Li Dexin, an official with the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the past, most of the research was conducted in Beijing and Hefei, the provincial capital. The new lab will make local virus tests possible and help control the epidemic in the city, which has seen 22 deaths, Li said.

There is no vaccine and experts are still trying to find out effective treatment, but most children suffering from mild forms of the disease could recover.

Local experts suggest traditional Chinese medicine for disease prevention and control, saying it would be of great help.

The provincial health authority has issued a draft plan recently, proposing some preventive measures including a recipe involving a number of Chinese herbs that must be used continuously for at least 7 days.

Shandong Province reported 1,440 HFMD cases on Thursday. The southernmost Hainan Province updated the number of infections to 180 and the northwestern Qinghai Province updated the number to 10on Thursday.

The Shandong health authority asked the grassroots hospitals to immediately shift children with fever under five years old to bigger hospitals for better treatment.

So far, EV71 is blamed for most of the 30 deaths in the outbreak of the disease. Of all the victims, 22 were in Anhui, three in Guangdong and two in Hainan, with the rest in Zhejiang, Guangxi, and Hunan, respectively.

Death toll from China viral outbreak rises to 32, 24,934 infected
www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-09 00:35:57

BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Contagious hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) has left 32 children dead and sickened 24,934 in China as of Thursday, according to Xinhua's tally based on confirmed death reports from provincial-level health bureaus.

An eight-month girl died of the disease early Monday morning in Fanyu District of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, despite emergency medical treatment, the provincial health administration said late Thursday night.

The baby, a native of central China's Henan Province, tested positive for enterovirus 71 (EV71) -- a virus that can cause a severe form of the disease.

So far, Guangdong has reported four deaths and a total of 7,103 infections in the outbreak of HFMD this year, including 34 cases of EV71 positive.

In Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southwest China, a boy aged one and a half years old from the rural area of Liuzhou City died on Tuesday, the local health administration announced.

The child began to cough and caught a fever on Saturday. His parents did not send him to hospital until three days later when he went into a coma.

The latest victim brought the death toll in the epidemic to two in Guangxi, which updated its total infections to 636 as of Thursday, and 31 dead in the country.

Most of the patients were not infected by EV71, and the number of new infections has been decreasing over the past several days, said Dong Boqing, director with Guangxi's disease control and prevention center.

Only nine of the 74 samples sent by local health bureaus were confirmed EV71 positive, Dong cited test results as saying.

Another two children died of EV71, which caused them to develop HFMD, in the southernmost Hainan Province, a provincial health department official said on Thursday.

No further information about them has been available so far.

According to the latest figures from the provincial health department, 180 cases of HFMD were reported by Thursday, of which five were confirmed to be infected with EV71.

So far, EV71 is blamed for most of the deaths in the outbreak of the disease. Of all the victims in China, 22 were in Anhui Province.

Re: China: EV-71 outbreak Kills 30 Children Nationwide, Approximately 16,000 Cases

I went down for a nap at 1:00. These were my last figures on the EV in China: Today, 09:55 AM, "21,502 by Thursday", and this: Today, 12:21 PM, "22,240 by Thursday". Woke up and it's this: Today, 01:20 PM "24,934 as of Thursday". So....for Thursday alone...it went up 3,452. That is a BIG JUMP. THEN, factor in the last figure for Wednesday: "16,778 as of Wednesday". Which is a jump to the first figure of Thursday of 4,724. Now, from the last figure on Wednesday to the last figure on Thursday (as of 4:00 pm EST) it is 8,156.

That indeed looks like a rapid and out-of-control progression Commonground.

Would one of our more mathematically-minded members attempt to come to a figure for a R0 and perhaps make a progression graph? It would help us understand what we could be confronted with if/when TSHTH with H5N1. Many thanks. :) FrenchieGirl

Infant disease spreads and claims more lives
By Ji Mi 2008-5-9

FATALITIES from hand, foot and mouth disease rose to 32 yesterday in China as the nation's south reported four more deaths from the illness that has infected nearly 25,000.

The number of cases on the mainland rose to 24,934 while in Macau 90 cases were reported as of yesterday.

The four latest fatalities were reported in Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan .

An eight-month-girl died on Monday in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, becoming the province's fourth victim of HFMD. The baby from central China's Henan Province tested positive for enterovirus 71, or EV 71, which can cause a severe form of HFMD, a common childhood ailment that typically causes little more than a fever and rash. Guangdong has recorded 7,103 cases of HFMD this year.

In its neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a boy aged 18 months from Linzhou City died on Tuesday, raising Guangxi's death toll to two. His parents did not seek medical attention until he fell into coma, three days after he showed HFMD symptoms last Saturday.

The southernmost Hainan Province yesterday also reported that two children died of the disease.

Eastern China's Shandong Province yesterday reported 1,440 HFMD infections, becoming the 21st provincial area to report the outbreak that mainly strikes children under six years old.

The epidemic has stabilized in the country's worst-hit Fuyang in Anhui Province, where no deaths from the infections have been reported for seven days, according to local health authorities. The city had 5,513 cases recorded early yesterday, 3,764 of whom have recovered. Of the 1,340 still hospitalized, three were listed in a critical condition.

About 95 percent of the patients are from the city's rural areas, Mao Qun'an, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, told a press conference on Wednesday.

The city has opened a "green passage" for HFMD patients, admitting them to designated hospitals for treatment without requiring a deposit from the patients' families - the usual practice at hospitals across the country.

The Fuyang government is paying the bills for families of HFMD victims, officials said. Those who have paid medical bills for the illness before the policy was adopted will be refunded.

Since last Friday the number of infections has soared.

WHO Representative to China on Hand, Foot and mouth disease will not affect Olympics
2008-05-08 07:44:41

"Large-scale outbreak of the epidemic, the reasons for unclear"

Reporter: The Chinese Government to WHO (World Health Organization) informed before you know whether the epidemic ?

WHO representative Troedsson: not only in China, in a larger regional context, we note that the disease was reported 20 years ago. 1998, the Taiwan region had more than 100,000 cases a year in Shandong, have large outbreak. I work in Sweden, also met with a similar disease. But in the Asian region, hand, foot and mouth disease outbreak to a larger scale, the reasons for this is not entirely clear.

We must recognize that this disease is not "to declare" (notifiable) disease as well. Whether local government or the Chinese Government are not required to inform the WHO, unlike the avian flu, cholera, yellow fever, and so on. Now the Chinese government has done, and it is recommended by the WHO, is in the country, to put it (to be declared) C Class statutory communicable diseases, means that the local health system must be found in the condition 24 hours after reporting to the Ministry of Health.

Reporter: The Chinese Government to the WHO briefing after the outbreak, WHO has done what specific work ?

Troedsson: We held several meetings, I just see the Chinese Minister of Health, discussed the relevant circumstances, to see what we can to provide support. We also discussed the improving health standards, to prevent the epidemic from further expansion, will be played in the case of closure of kindergartens or primary schools, suggested parents not to let sick children go to school or going to public places. We hope that the issue of public information and let people know how to protect themselves and to prevent further transmission.

Reporter: 2003 period compared to the atypical pneumonia, WHO and China's cooperation is becoming more mature and effective ?

Troedsson: Yes. Cooperation is very good. We have been informed of the ongoing Chinese Ministry of Health, which has done very well, I have nothing to complain about. Compared with the past, WHO and the Chinese Ministry of Health have very good cooperation and communication also very smooth.

"Even if there are more cases of the outbreak, WHO also announced that China had no reason for the 'infected areas'"

Reporter: Hand, Foot and mouth disease is usually in the 6 July to enter the peak of incidence, the next few months, is likely to have more people infected. If the situation worse, WHO issued a travel advisory be? WHO definition of "affected areas" What is the standard ?

Troedsson: even if there are more cases of the outbreak. WHO also announced that China had no reason to "infected areas", we will not release travel advisories. We should be more careful so that we prevent, but there is no reason to release any information on travel or other restrictive requirements. As we have repeatedly emphasized, this is a common childhood diseases, not only in China, will occur in other countries.

Reporter: Beijing has more than 1,000 cases of Hand, Foot and mouth disease cases, do you think this will affect how the Olympic Games ?

Troedsson: I do not think it will have any impact on the Olympics. Hand, Foot and mouth disease is the childhood diseases. Although adults may be infected, but this is rare. This is usually a mild, no complications of the disease.

Reporter: But some experts pointed out that although there is no adult infection EV7l incidence of cases, but the adult infection may become negative, that is carrying the virus, but have no symptoms of infection.

Troedsson: Yes. This is correct. You can carry the virus, no symptoms in the case of transmission. Therefore, it is important that health conditions have to wash their hands and maintain good health status, ensure that you do not spread the virus. In most cases, in 7-10 days, complications and will not recover.

At present no virus mutates

Reporter: Many Chinese people will want to listen to the views of WHO, why this sudden virus outbreak in China ? Whether the virus will have variation ? The worst outcome would be what ?

Troedsson: relevant departments try to separate these viruses, through its gene sequence to determine what subtype of the virus. See now is similar to the subtype of the last few years, the virus does not appear to change, so now also do not see the risk of virus mutation. The worst outcome is that there will be more and more cases, to prevent a greater range and more children of infection. But now, the right control measures have been taken, I think this can be controlled.

Reporter: The Chinese government on April 23 to the WHO report, on April 27 by the Xinhua report, this time to see how bad ?

Troedsson: In theory, when the public informed about the time, the best for the public to fully know how to protect themselves, how to prevent further transmission, therefore, should avoid any unnecessary delay, so that people understand the epidemic. I think the local government and the Ministry of Health has taken the measures are appropriate and adequate, I think, the action can in the next few days or several weeks to prevent the mass infection.

The Chinese government is mobilizing all the available resources to stop the contagion of enterovirus 71 sweeping the country. Prime Minister Wen Jiabao called State Council Standing Committee on Wednesday and ordered a ??hygiene patriotic movement,?? urging all civil servants do their best to toughen sanitary inspection on environment and food and stop the spread of virus. Wen warned that epidemics can take hold during the summer season.
EV71 spreads through feces, nasal mucus, and saliva, and can threaten life when it develops into meningitis, pneumonia, and encephalitis. In most cases, it causes foot-and-mouth disease, whose symptoms include high fever and blisters in hands, feet, and in the mouth among children aged between six months to six years old. Hong Kong Wen Wei Po reported on Thursday that 19,932 people have been infected with EV71 in 22 out of 31 provinces, directly governed cities, and autonomous regions. In Anhui Province, where the disease first broke out, 22 children died. The death toll nationwide has reached 28 in five regions including Guangdong, Zhejiang, Hunan provinces, and Guangxi Autonomous Region. The Chinese government is especially sensitive to the issue as it fears the epidemic would play against the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in August. Chinese authorities have been issuing daily statements saying that the situation is not as serious as to interfere with the Olympics. :tiphat: http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200805/200805090015.html

WHO spokesperson advises on hand-foot-mouth disease prevention, cure
2008-05-09 11:15:25
GENEVA, May 8 (Xinhua) --

The World Health Organization's (WHO) Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response Department (EPR) spokesperson Gregory Hartl spoke to Xinhua on Thursday about effective prevention and cure measures for hand-foot-mouth disease(HFMD).

Hartl, who also served as project leader of the EPR's Information Management and Communications, said HFMD can be transmitted through the respiratory tract and fecal waste, and that cases of the disease have previously been reported in many countries around the world.

Measures that can be taken to avoid getting infected with the virus include frequent hand-washing and laundry, and covering one's mouth while coughing and sneezing, Hartl said.

Symptoms of HFMD include the eruption of rashes on the palms, soles and mouth, he added.

Young patients with such symptoms must drink a lot of water and stay well nourished, Hartl advised.

It is important that people know more about the disease and its symptoms, he said, adding that the Chinese government is launching extensive training of personnel and campaigns on HFMD in the wake of a recent outbreak.

China's hand-foot-mouth cases rise to 27,499
www.chinaview.cn 2008-05-09 18:56:33

BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua) -- China has recorded 27,499 hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases so far this year as of Friday, resulting in 34 deaths, according to a Xinhua tally of local official figures.

The figure stood at 24,934 on Thursday, Xinhua found.

The rising number reflected the recent order by the Ministry of Health that made HFMD a class C epidemic, the incidence of which must be reported.

The southwestern Sichuan Province reported 642 HFMD cases as ofFriday. The southernmost Hainan Province updated the number of infections to 314 and the central Hubei Province updated its total to 1,424 on Friday. The eastern Anhui Province added 705 new cases on Friday.

Many viruses can cause HFMD, but so far, EV71 (enterovirus 71) has been blamed for most of the 34 deaths in the epidemic.

Of the fatalities, 24 were in Anhui and four were in Guangdong. There were two each in Hainan and Guangxi and one each in Zhejiangand Hunan.

Hand-foot-mouth disease figure rises in Zhejiang
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2008-05-10 09:03

HANGZHOU - The number of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) cases in Zhejiang Province rose by nearly 4,000 to 5,132 in about five days, the local health administration said Friday.

A local health official said the increase reflects enhanced reporting system. It doesn't mean an outbreak of the disease yet.

Among the infections, 26 tested positive for EV71, a virus that can cause a severe form of the disease.

So far, four patients are in critical conditions and 288 children are receiving treatment in hospital.

Zhejiang registered 1,198 HFMD cases as of May 4, including one death.

The drastic increase in the number of infections does not indicate a severe outbreak of the disease, but was partly due to a recent order by the Ministry of Health that made reporting of HFMD incidence to the government mandatory, according to Zhang Ping, spokesman with the provincial health authority.

"It is not a large-scale outbreak as the cases scatter around the province without any concentration in one particular place," Zhang said.

People's awareness of the disease has improved and local health organizations have strengthened monitoring and reporting, which also jointly drove up the number of patients, Zhang added.

In addition to launching morning check-ups in kindergartens and primary schools, the local government has reinforced surveillance on children moving in from other HFMD-hit regions, Zhang said.

He added that financial aid has been offered to families that are unable to afford the medical expenses for their children.

HFMD is caused by up to 20 types of virus such as the EV 71, Coxsackie A16 and Echo virus but has similar symptoms like a slight fever and rashes on hands and feet, and most of the cases involve young children under six.

So far, EV 71 is blamed for most of the 34 HFMD deaths in China.
