PREVENTATIVE health and safety measures have been taken at a primary school following an outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease.

On Friday, staff at Newdigate Primary School in Anderton Road, Bedworth, were notified by a parent that a child was found by their doctor to have the common viral illness - completely unrelated to foot and mouth disease which affects cattle, sheep and pigs.

Head teacher Chris Cook immediately contacted Warwickshire County Council and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) who advised her on appropriate action to take.

A handful of other cases have been confirmed at the 237-pupil school between Coventry and Nuneaton.

As a preventative measure antiseptic gel is available in all classrooms.

Hand foot and mouth disease gets its name from a rash which develops on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. It can also cause sores in the mouth.

The disease is easily spread and particularly common in children aged under 10. A number of panic-striken parents had confused the out-break with foot and mouth disease.

All parents have been sent a letter and an HPA information leaflet about hand, foot and mouth disease.

A statement from Newdigate Primary School said: "Hand, foot and mouth disease is not the same thing as foot and mouth disease, which affects cattle, sheep and pigs. The two infections are completely unrelated, and you cannot contract hand, foot and mouth disease from animals.

"Hand, foot and mouth dis-ease is easily spread and it is common in children under 10 and therefore often affects children attending nurseries and primary schools.

Yes, it is almost certainly EV-71, but not necessarily the same strain causing deaths in China.

Kindergartens in Chinese city ordered shut amid viral epidemic​
All kindergartens in Fuyang City in east China's Anhui Province were ordered to remain closed following the May Day holiday, which ended on Saturday.

The decision was taken by the Fuyang City Headquarters for prevention and control of the intestinal virus enterovirus 71, also known as EV71.

Kindergartens began their holiday last Monday, three days ahead of the national May Day holiday. A date for re-opening will be announced later, according to the announcement of closure.

Experts said the move would help prevent EV71 from spreading further.

EV71 can cause hand, foot and mouth disease, which usually starts with a slight fever followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. There is no vaccine.

There has been a massive outbreak of EV71 in Fuyang, with 3,736 children sickened as of Friday. Of these, 22 have died and 12 were in critical condition. Some had brain, heart and lung damage.

All were aged below six, with the majority being under two.

Two other deaths from the lethal virus were reported in south China's Guangdong Province on Saturday evening.

So far, China has tallied 4,987 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease in the provinces of Anhui, Hubei and Shaanxi this year.

E China province reports 21 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease​
East China's Jiangxi Province has recorded 21 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease this year, but no deaths have been reported, local health authorities said Sunday.

Ten cases were caused by the intestinal virus enterovirus 71 (EV71), while the others were caused by the Coxsackie A16 virus, another kind of enterovirus, said a Jiangxi Provincial Disease Prevention and Control Center official.

The number of hand-foot-mouth disease cases was almost the same as last year. People should follow preventive measures but do not need to panic, the official said.

EV71 can cause hand, foot and mouth disease, which usually starts with a slight fever followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet.

Coxsackie A16 virus causes most cases of hand, foot and mouth syndrome. The major features are painful mouth ulcers and blisters on the palms, fingers and soles.

There has been a large outbreak of EV71 in Anhui Province, where the death toll in Fuyang city has risen to 22 since early March.

Two children have also died from the EV71 virus in south China's Guangdong Province, the provincial health department said on Saturday.

China has tallied 4,987 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease in the provinces of Anhui, Hubei and Shaanxi this year, most of which were confirmed to be caused by the EV 71 virus.

Nationwide alert issued on disease

A nationwide alert has been issued in a bid to control a virus that has caused 22 deaths in one city and shows signs of spreading to other parts of the country.

The Ministry of Health warned on Saturday that cases of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) will possibly increase in the following months since June and July are the peak seasons for the disease.

Following the 22 children's deaths reportedly caused by enterovirus 71, or EV71, in Fuyang of Anhui province, two other deaths from the same virus have been confirmed in Guangdong province, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.

By May 2, 4,529 HFMD cases had been reported in Anhui, including 3,736 cases in worst-hit Fuyang, the provincial health authority said yesterday. Of those in Fuyang, 22 have died and 12 are in critical condition, with more than 600 still in hospital. Some have damaged brains, hearts and lungs.

Several hundred cases have emerged in other places including Henan, Hubei, Shaanxi, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces as well as the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.

EV71 has been confirmed to have caused some of the cases, Xinhua reported.

A high-level taskforce headed by Minister of Health Chen Zhu has been set up to curb the spread of the highly contagious disease following the outbreak of EV71.

"Local Party and government officials are on high alert. The authorities are taking urgent measures to prevent the disease and speed up treatment," the ministry said in a statement.

It said special equipment was being installed in children's wards; and the local authorities were strengthening checks on food and water safety to stop the disease from spreading.

HFMD, characterized by fever, sores in the mouth and rashes on hands and feet, is not a new infection and is common among infants and children, experts say. It can be triggered by various viruses and usually does not lead to death.

Of the fatal cases reported this year, severe complications due to EV71 infection including meningitis, encephalitis, pulmonary edema and paralysis were the cause of death.

"While not all the children infected with the virus develop the lethal complications, prevention and early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for recovery" said Liu Xiaolin, a leading doctor at Fuyang No 2 People's Hospital, which has been designated for treatment of the disease.

The MOH said on its website that "HFMD is highly preventable and can be treated".

However, there is no effective vaccine available worldwide to kill the EV71 and "current medical intervention targets the complications from the viral infection", Liu noted.

Under such circumstances, prevention should be a priority, said Liu Qian, vice-minister of health, who heads an expert team in Fuyang.

The ministry issued a circular on Friday requiring hospitals to report the disease within 24 hours, and told local health departments to publicize emergency information and the epidemic situation.

"The move is important for more timely reports and would facilitate research," said a researcher surnamed Ning at the center for disease prevention and control of Fuyang.

To relieve the economic burden on patients, the Fuyang government is set to provide highly subsidized, or even free, treatment.

"Most of the infected children in Fuyang are from the poor countryside," Liu noted. A 10-day hospitalization typically costs 10,000 yuan ($1,420), she added.

The ministry also vowed more training on HFMD diagnosis and treatment for pediatricians across the country.

The emergency medical team sent to the Fuyang, Anhui province by the Health Ministry says quick and correct treatment in the last two weeks has greatly reduced the death rate among young children with the disease. The team has been giving local doctors special training to deal with the disease.

22 children have now died from the EV71 virus. In the past two weeks, 5 of the 36 severely ill died, but most of the others are in a stable condition.

BEIJING -- A highly infectious virus that has killed 24 children in China is unlikely to be a threat to the Beijing Olympics, although it is too early to tell whether it has peaked, the World Health Organization said Sunday.

The death toll from the virus, which mostly sickens children, rose to 24 Sunday as two more deaths were reported in a new province amid heightened efforts by China's Health Ministry to contain it.
The outbreak of enterovirus 71 -- which causes a severe type of hand, foot and mouth disease -- is another headache for the Communist government as it prepares for the Olympic Games, already tarnished by unrest among Tibetans in western China and an international torch relay disrupted by protests.
"I don't see it at all as a threat to the Olympics or any upcoming events. ... This is a disease mainly affecting young children," WHO China representative Hans Troedsson told a news conference.
Troedsson said the virus normally peaks in June and July so these outbreaks were earlier than normal, meaning there could still be an increase in infections as the weather warms up. The disease thrives in hot climates, and Asia has seen increased occurrences in recent years, including in Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan, he said.
The official Xinhua News Agency said an 18-month-old boy who died in Foshan city in Guangdong province Friday had the enterovirus 71 virus, also known as EV-71. Another child who died in the same district on April 25 also tested positive, it said.

The number of Chinese children infected with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) continues to rise, with reported cases exceeding 8,531 on Monday.

All were aged below six, with the majority being under two.

Altogether 25 children have died of the disease.

Tests have confirmed 24 of the deaths were triggered by the virus known as enterovirus 71 or EV71.

According to the Guidelines Regarding Prevention and Control of HFMD published on the Ministry of Health website, HFMD can be caused by a host of intestinal viruses, but EV71 and the Coxsackievirus (Cox A 16) were the most common.

Anhui Province, in east China, and Guangdong Province, south China were the worst hit areas.

Twenty-two of the deaths occurred in Fuyang, a city in northwestern Anhui, and the rest happened in Guangdong.

The two regions were followed by Beijing, Jiangsu, Hunan and Hubei, according to statistics released by local health departments.

In Anhui alone, 622 new cases were reported on Saturday, including 362 in Fuyang, driving up the number of children with HFMD to 5,151 in Anhui.

Beijing has recorded at least 1,010 cases of the disease, while Guangdong registered 925 cases as of Sunday.

Both EV71 and Cox A16 can cause HFMD, which usually starts witha slight fever followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet.

Those sickened by EV71 often show serious symptoms. It can also lead to meningitis, encephalitis, pulmonary edema and paralysis in some children. There is no vaccine.

Saying reports of HFMD could increase in the next few months, the Health Ministry issued a circular late last month requiring better management and surveillance of the disease.

The ministry asked hospitals for daily reports on the disease, and for local health departments to report emergencies promptly and increase investment in research into the disease.

China punishes doctors, officials for misdeeds in foot-hand-mouth epidemic

Authorities in east China's Anhui province have ordered punishment for 10 doctors and officials for their misdeeds in handling the hand-foot-mouth disease that has caused 22 deaths in the province, official sources said on Monday.

Song Yunxin and Li Guangming, both doctors with the Shaoying Town Hospital in Fuyang city were given demerits on Saturday by the Yingquan district health bureau for delaying shifting a patient to the county hospital.

The patient came to the hospital on April 30 and May 1 for fever and vomiting. Song and Li just gave intravenous drips to the patient without proper examination, nor did they refer the patient to other hospitals.

Later on May 1, when the same patient came to the hospital of Xingliu township. The case was diagnosed as meningitis by Liu Jiajun, vice director of the hospital. And it was not until 9:00 p.m. on the same day that the patient was shifted to another hospital.

Wang Dongjun, a Lichen village doctor in Santa town, Taihe county, was fined 4,080 yuan (583 U.S. dollars) for illegally injecting immune globulin on 17 children.

Zhejiang Province in east China has recorded 1,198 cases of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD), including one death, this year, the provincial health department said on Monday.

A five-year-old boy died of the epidemic triggered by the intestinal virus known as EV71 in Wenzhou city on April 6 when medical efforts failed.

Another eight HFMD cases were also tested positive for EV71, a highly contagious virus that preys on children usually aged between two and six.

The rest of the registered cases were possibly caused by Cox A 16 or Echo virus, according to Lin Junfen, an expert with the provincial center for disease control and prevention.

Zhejiang has witnessed an increasing number of HFMD cases in recent years.

It reported 101 cases in 2005, 793 cases in 2006 and 1,607 cases in 2007, said Zhao Feng, an official with the health department.

A medical emergency reporting mechanism has been established in the province to closely track suspected cases, and local authorities have been reminding people of paying more attention to sanitation.

Altogether 26 children have died of the disease across the nation, with 22 registered in Anhui Province and three in Guangdong Province. Tests have confirmed 25 of the deaths were triggered by EV71.
