BEIJING (AFP) ? China on Sunday announced the first suspected case of swine flu on the mainland -- a man in southwestern Sichuan province recently returned from the United States, state media reported.

The 30-year-old had just arrived in the Sichuan capital of Chengdu after returning from the United States via Tokyo on Saturday afternoon, the Xinhua news agency said, citing the Ministry of Health.

The man, surnamed Bao, had travelled on Northwest Airlines flight NW029 from Tokyo and arrived at Beijing International Airport before flying on to Chengdu on a connecting flight, it said.

He was found to have a fever in a Sichuan hospital and was diagnosed in preliminary tests to have A(H1N1), as swine flu is officially known, Xinhua said.

China on Thursday defended the strict swine flu measures it has taken, arguing they were necessary to stop the virus spreading through Asia and to avoid "catastrophic consequences" in the world's most populous nation.

China Reports Suspected Case of A/H1N1 Flu in Sichuan

????One suspected case of A/H1N1 influenza was reported in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Sunday.

????The case, the first of its kind in the Chinese mainland so far, involved a 30-year-old man surnamed Bao. He had just returned to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan, from St. Louis of the United States via Tokyo on Saturday afternoon. He studied at a U.S. University.

????Bao had traveled on flight NW029 from Tokyo and arrived at the Beijing International Airport on Saturday. He then flew from Beijing to Chengdu on flight U8882 the same day, the ministry said.

????According to the Sichuan health department that reported the case to the MOH Sunday afternoon, Bao was found with fever in the Sichuan People's Hospital and was "initially diagnosed as suspected A/H1N1 influenza case" based on his symptoms and laboratory tests.

????Bao was transferred to the Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital, the ministry said.

????The MOH said Bao developed symptoms of fever on the flight from Beijing to Chengdu accompanied by sore throats, coughing, stuffy nose and sneezing. He went to the Sichuan People's Hospital after getting off the plane.

????He was tested "weakly positive" to A/H1N1 virus twice by the Sichuan Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it said.

????The MOH has sent expert team to Chengdu and asked the local health authorities to immediately send the virus specimen to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention for a second check.

????The ministry has asked the Sichuan authorities to strengthen treatment of the patient, search all the people who had close contact with Bao and conduct relevant epidemiological investigation.

????It has informed provinces and municipalities concerned to immediately look for the people who had close contact with Bao, and called for passengers of the two flights to contact health authorities as soon as possible.

????According to the Sichuan Center for Disease Control, Bao's girlfriend and his father who were in close contact with Bao, have been put into quarantine.

????Also in quarantine was a local taxi driver who was in close contact with Bao, according to Sichuan Provincial Department of Public Health.

????The department also said there were altogether 150 passengers aboard the flight U8882 and more than 130 of them had been found.

????The ministry has reported the case to the World Health Organization and relevant countries and regions.

????In Beijing, a man with a fever after a shared flight with three people who were later diagnosed with A/H1N1 influenza, was cleared of the virus after being tested negative, the emergency office of the Beijing Municipal Government said Sunday.

????The man, a native of Beijing, was aboard the U.S. airlines NW025, which flew from Canada to Japan via the United States on Friday. Three Japanese passengers aboard the plane were later tested positive for A/H1N1 influenza.

????The man, whose name remained unknown, arrived Beijing Friday night, when his body temperature was normal. He developed fever on Saturday and was put under medical observation immediately.

Re: China - Confirms 1st Case of 2009 H1N1, Contacts in 21 Provinces in Isolation

May 11 (Bloomberg) -- China, after reporting its first case of swine flu, is now focused on a nationwide effort to contact and quarantine those who had contact with the 30-year-old student whose infection was confirmed today.

Passengers aboard flights with the infected man, who was returning to his home in southwestern China from school in the U.S., are in 21 provinces, Deng Haihua, director of the Ministry of Health’s news office, said at a briefing in Beijing today. China Mobile Ltd., the nation’s biggest wireless carrier, sent text messages asking subscribers to contact health authorities if they were aboard flights with the man.

China, accused of underreporting severe acute respiratory syndrome infections in 2003, was criticized this month for excessive measures against swine flu, including the cancellation of all flights from Mexico and a ban of pork imports from parts of the U.S. and Canada. Mexican Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa called China’s decision to quarantine Mexican nationals who showed no signs of illness “discriminatory.”

“People who have had close contact with a confirmed case should be quarantined but the question is how close is close,” said Vivian Tan, China spokeswoman for the World Health Organization in Beijing. “That’s where different countries have responded differently.”

The infected Chinese man, surnamed Bao, developed a fever and cough on a May 9 flight from Beijing to the southwestern city of Chengdu, and checked himself into a hospital because he felt unwell, the Ministry of Health said.

St. Louis to Chengdu

Bao, a student at the University of Missouri and a native of Sichuan province’s Neijiang city, flew to Beijing from St. Louis, Missouri via Tokyo, the official Xinhua News Agency reported. Chengdu is Sichuan’s capital.

Bao may have had a sore throat on his flight to Beijing and so may face legal charges if proved that he intentionally failed to disclose his condition on his health declaration form when entering China, the China National Radio reported today.

Authorities in Sichuan have placed Bao’s father and girlfriend under quarantine, the provincial health bureau said. The crew of Sichuan Airlines flight 3U8882, on which Bao flew from Beijing to Chengdu, was also been quarantined, it said.

More than 130 of the 150 passengers aboard the Sichuan Airlines flight have been quarantined at local health facilities in 21 provinces and regions, Xinhua reported today. A list of the passengers has been distributed to local health authorities, the health ministry’s Deng said today.

Passengers Contacted

Authorities have also contacted 210 of the 233 passengers they were seeking from Northwest Airlines Corp. flight NW029, which Bao took from Tokyo to Beijing, Xinhua reported.

China’s health ministry has yet to find indications that Bao infected people he came into contact with, Deng said.

“So far we have been quite pleased with how China has responded to this outbreak,” said the WHO’s Tan.

Bao is under observation and in stable condition, the health ministry said. He was found to have a fever with a sore throat, coughing and other symptoms on his flight from Beijing to Chengdu and subsequently taken to the Sichuan People’s Hospital after leaving the plane, Xinhua reported. Bao tested “weakly positive” for swine flu at the hospital and was transferred to the Chengdu Infectious Disease Hospital, the report said.

President Hu Jintao said China must step up measures to stop the spread of swine flu now that the first case is confirmed, China Central Television reported today. Premier Wen Jiabao said China will remain vigilant to prevent the further entry of the virus, the state-run broadcaster reported.
Swine flu has sickened at least 4,379 people in 29 countries, including 49 who died, according to the health agency’s figures from yesterday that exclude the case in China.
