The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (January 27) closely monitoring two human cases of avian influenza A(H5N6) in the Mainland, and again urged the public to maintain strict personal, food and environmental hygiene both locally and during travel.

The first case involves a 68-year-old man living in Langzhong in Sichuan. He developed symptoms on January 3, and was admitted for treatment on January 4. The patient is in critical condition.

The second case involves a 55-year-old woman living in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, who had exposure to slaughtered poultry before onset. She developed symptoms on January 6, and was admitted for treatment on January 9. The patient is in critical condition.

From 2014 to date, 65 human cases of avian influenza A(H5N6) have been reported by Mainland health authorities...

The Health Bureau stated that, according to the latest notification from the mainland health department, there were 2 new confirmed cases of human infection with H5N6 avian influenza in the mainland, and residents were urged to avoid contact with poultry and pay attention to personal and food hygiene.

According to the data, the first patient was a 68-year-old male, unemployed, who now lives in Langzhong City, Sichuan Province. He became unwell on January 3 and was admitted to hospital on January 4; the second patient was a 55-year-old female, unemployed, living in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. He developed symptoms on January 6 and was hospitalized on January 9. The two patients are now in critical condition, and both had contact with live poultry before they became ill.

The Health Bureau stated that since April 2014, there have been confirmed cases of H5N6 avian influenza in the Mainland in Sichuan, Guangdong, Yunnan, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Jiangsu. Departments and the World Health Organization maintain close contact and closely monitor the epidemic situation in various places and in Macao.
