On October 23, several monkeys, suspected of drowning, were found floating on the surface of a water tank used for water storage in a village in Mashan County, Nanning, Guangxi. Footage from the scene showed at least a dozen monkeys on the water.
On the 24th, multiple departments stated that the number of dead monkeys was being tallied. Officials from the Mashan County Forestry Bureau stated that the cause of death was under investigation. An official from the Mashan County Government Office stated that it was the dry season in Guangxi, and the incident occurred in an irrigation water tank. The monkeys may have fallen into the tank while trying to drink water but were unable to climb out due to the low water level.
The water tank has been shut down, and disease control and other departments are carrying out disinfection. The public security authorities have launched an investigation.
