BEIJING, 6 Oct 2009 (AFP) - China reported its first death from H1N1 flu last Sunday in the Tibetan region (west), announced on Tuesday the ministry of Health.

The ministry announced the case on its website, without further precision that indicated that "efforts to save the life (the patient) failed."

In a separate statement, said that so far China recorded 21,453 cases of H1N1 flu, 4560 of whom are still under treatment.

BEIJING, Oct 6 (Reuters) - China on Tuesday reported its first death from the H1N1 flu strain after weeks on alert against the disease.
The victim, who died on Sunday, was an 18-year-old woman from the Tibetan autonomous region, who had been admitted to hospital the previous day complaining of a sore throat, cough and aches, the official Xinhua agency said.
The Health Ministry confirmed the death, but declined to comment further.
The government has reported the death to the World Health Organisation and is now rushing 200,000 doses of vaccine to remote areas, state media said.
Health Minister Chen Zhu warned last month that China faced a grim situation in containing the disease as schools start up again and the number of cases rises. [ID:nPEK102128].
The government said at the end of September that there had been nearly 20,000 reported cases of the disease across the country, but over 14,000 had fully recovered and only 10 were seriously ill.
There are already strict checks at border crossings and many places where crowds gather like karaoke parlours, and the government began a mass vaccination programme in late September, starting with around 100,000 students in Beijing.
Zhu said at the time that the government aimed to produce 26 million doses of vaccine by the end of October, and 65 million doses by the end of 2009.
Public service providers and vulnerable groups in densely populated cities and travel hubs would have priority, he added.

Grand Reuters Health Department informed the Tibet Autonomous Region, Tibet, an influenza A H1N1 influenza patients died on October 4.

According to reports, the patient was in Tibet Lhasa Mozhugongka County, female, 18 years old. October 3, because of cough, sore throat, body aches, to Lhasa City People's Maizhokunggar County hospital the same day once the body temperature up to 40 degrees Celsius. Maizhokunggar County People's Hospital Patients were admitted to hospital and given anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and symptomatic treatment. At 3:20 on the 4th, patient's condition suddenly worsened appeared irritable, confusion, shortness of breath and other crisis, the hospital immediately for emergency treatment after she died later.

According to the Tibet Autonomous Region health department has close contacts of patients to take medical observation measures; As of now, no abnormal clinical manifestations. Tibet Autonomous Region Center for Disease Control and Prevention, hospital tested a sample of censorship, and by the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention review showed that influenza A H1N1 influenza virus nucleic acid positive. October 6, the Tibet Autonomous Region Health Department advised that it is an autonomous region in patients with influenza A H1N1 influenza on October 4th she died, results have been reviewing the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that this is the first case of the Mainland of China reported H1N1 Influenza influenza deaths.

10月6日，西藏自治区卫生厅通报，该自治区一甲型H1N1流感患者于10月4日抢救无效死亡，结果已经中国疾病预防控制中心复核确认，这是我国内地报告的首例甲型H1N1流感死亡病例。

国务院领导对此高度重视并作出重要批示，要求卫生部门加强对地方重症病人的救治指导工作。卫生部于10月6日召开卫生系统电视电话会议，通报了当前甲型H1N1流感疫情形势和近期重症及死亡病例情况，并对甲型H1N1流感疫情防控工作进行了再部署、再安排。

卫生部要求，要重点加强重症病例发现与救治、疫情监测工作，努力减少重症和死亡病例。要做好疫情防控，尤其是疫苗接种和聚集性疫情暴发的防控工作；加强对边远地区的防控工作支持力度，防范出现大规模疫情暴发。卫生部商工信部已紧急调20万剂疫苗空运至拉萨，近日，还将优先安排落实对西部边远、高原地区省份的疫苗调运。

And they finally announced one. I thought it was possible that they wouldn't announce any deaths in mainland China during this pandemic. Unless there is some reason this death would have come to light anyway (the political situaiton in Tibet is somewhat different than in the rest of mainland China), I am surprised. Perhaps we do need to consider that China's fatality count might be correct. Germany has only reported one death, on about the same number of cases as China, and Russia has also reported at most one death.

Maybe they were telling the truth after all...
