African swine fever hits huge, foreign-invested Chinese farm

BEIJING: China reported an outbreak of deadly African swine fever on a huge pig farm part-owned by a Danish investment fund, showing the spread of the virus to modern industrial farms expected to have the best levels of disease prevention.

The outbreak occurred on a farm in Suihua city with 73,000 pigs in northeastern Heilongjiang province, owned by the Heilongjiang Asia-Europe Animal Husbandry Co Ltd, a company established in 2016.

The farm is the largest yet to be hit by the disease, which has infected almost 100 farms across China since August 2018, spreading faster than in any other country to date.

　　On January 12, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs received a report from the China Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center and was diagnosed by the Jiangsu Provincial Animal Disease Prevention and Control Center. Two farms under the jurisdiction of a company in Shuyang County, Jiangsu Province, had an African swine fever epidemic. Up to now, the above two occasions have recorded 68,969 pigs, 2,452 heads, and 1,369 deaths.
　　Immediately after the outbreak, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs sent a steering group to the local area. The local authorities have started the emergency response mechanism as required, and adopted measures such as blockade, culling, harmless treatment, disinfection, etc., to treat all the sick and culled pigs harmlessly. At the same time, all pigs and their products are prohibited from being transferred out of the blockade, and pigs are prohibited from being transported into the blockade. China reports new African swine fever case

BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- China has confirmed a new outbreak of African swine fever in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

On a local farm in Yongning County, 26 pigs were confirmed infected with the viral disease and 13 dead as of 11 p.m. Saturday, said the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Sunday, citing a report of China Animal Disease Control Center.

A team has been dispatched to the area to give guidance, and local authorities have initiated an emergency response to isolate and cull the affected pigs and disinfect the venue...

Australia Border Patrol Detects African Swine Fever In Pork Products

It?s a major fear many countries have?African swine fever (ASF) entering into a country?s borders through imported pork products.
Australia is reporting the first instances of products with the ASF virus being smuggled into their borders. The Australian Department of Agriculture says they found the ASF virus in five of 152 samples analyzed by the Australian Animal Health Laboratory in Geelong.
The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) reports that in addition to the findings in Australia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan [and Thailand] have reported the presence of ASF in confiscated products at ports of entry since last August.

Taipei, Jan. 24 (CNA) Another four cases of pork products originating in China have tested positive for African swine fever (ASF), including the first courier package found to contain meat products that tested positive for the virus, a Council of Agriculture (COA) official said Thursday.

During a press conference organized by the government's ASF disaster response center, COA deputy chief Huang Chin-Cheng (黃金城) said the four new cases brought the total to 18.

According to the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ), the 15th case was found on Jan. 14 in a courier package containing ham sausages produced in China's Shandong province.

It was the first time pork products in a courier package tested positive for ASF, the BAPHIQ said, adding that this shows the virus could enter Taiwan through multiple channels, including the postal system.

The 16th case, which was dried pork jerky produced in China's Jiangsu province, was sent anonymously to inspection officials in Hsinchu...

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- China's agriculture authority on Friday reported a falling number of African swine fever cases and vowed to continue to take preventive measures.

By February 1, 92 infected areas in 23 provinces have been unlocked. Seventeen provinces including Henan, Liaoning, Zhejiang and Anhui have been freed from the epidemic with all of the infected zones unblocked, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

The epidemic has shown signs of abating since December 2018. Five cases were reported in January 2019...

BEIJING (AP) ? China has reported a new outbreak of African swine fever that is threating the country's vital pork industry.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs reported Friday the disease had been detected on a farm in Yongzhou in the central province of Hunan, where 4,600 pigs were being raised.

Although just 171 of the pigs had died and 270 were found sick, ministry regulations require all pigs on an affected farm must be culled and disposed of and the area quarantined and decontaminated...

A major Chinese food producer said Monday that traces of the African swine fever virus had been found in its frozen dumplings...

...Sanquan Food, based in central Henan province, issued a public statement confirming media reports published in recent days that contaminated pork dumplings were detected in two provinces that do not share a border.

The company said suspect batches of dumplings had reached grocery stores, but that it was sealing affected products and cooperating with authorities.

The statement did not mention a broader recall...

BEIJING: Major Chinese frozen food producer Sanquan Food Co Ltd said on Monday it has recalled products that may be contaminated with African swine fever, following media reports that some of its dumplings tested positive for the virus...

...Sanquan, one of China?s top dumpling brands, said in a statement to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange that it has recalled all products suspected of contamination, specifically citing reports of contamination in three batches of pork dumplings. The company said it is cooperating with local authorities on an investigation into the reports.

The company did not confirm or deny the reports in the statement.

Late on Friday, the Communist Party-run Beijing News said that dozens of samples of processed pork products sold in the northwestern Chinese province of Gansu were found containing the virus.

The positive samples, confirmed by local authorities, according to the report, came from 11 different companies including Sanquan, Kedi Group and Synear....
